A round-up of the top films and tunes heading your way this month
Tell No One
Director Guillaume Canet Starring François Cluzet, Kristin Scott Thomas
Harlan Coben’s six-million-selling novel is transformed by Guillaume Canet into something like a French Fugitive meets The Usual Suspects.
This breathless man-on-the-run mystery sees a grieving doctor confronted by an email from his wife. Nothing unusal there, except that she was murdered eight years ago. But was she? And why is there new evidence in her murder with Alex’s blood on it. Come to that, why are Alex’s friends being violently harrassed by a gang of thugs? Alex has no choice but to pull a Harrison Ford out of a hospital window and figure out the answers to these questions for himself. All the while, the advice of his wife rings in his ears: “Tell no one”.
To say that this is a twisty thriller would be a massive understatement.
It’s a polished and sophisticated effort from Canet, supported by great performances, but it might just be a little bit too clever for its own good.
Still, the ending has a satisfying impact, even if you’re not quite sure how you got there.
The White Stripes
Icky Thump
Three weeks might not sound like a long time to spend making an album, but it’s a record for The White Stripes, and the result is Icky Thump. It’s a weird name, but then the Stripes are a weird band, favouring low-fi, spewing guitars and Jack White’s mewling lyrics. This time they’ve even broken out the bagpipes. Be afraid! Or not: Icky Thump turns out to be yet another propulsive piece of rock chaos from the Detroit duo, with highlights including the title track, and the epic ‘300mph Torrential Outpour Blues’.
Andrea Corr
10 Feet High
Loveable pop leprechaun Andrea Corr has already tasted mega-success with her brothers and sisters, but now she’s ditching the tin whistles for something a little more… interesting. Need proof? Look no further than producer Nellee Hooper, whose previous collaborators include girl power warriors Madonna, Byörk and Gwen Stefani. But Corrs fans needn’t worry – 10 of the 11 songs on Ten Feet High have been penned by Andrea herself, and there’s no chance of her slipping into a cone bra and fishnets anytime soon. Instead, what you get is some solid, if slightly skewed, pop staples powered by Andrea’s fresh-as-ever vocals.
In the news
Remember the name… Shia LaBeouf
He might sound like something you’d order in a Brussels’ restaurant, but this 20-year-old actor is Hollywood’s hottest property. After making his feature debut in 2003’s Holes, Shia struck up a friendship with Steven Spielberg that will see him star in the Spielberg-produced blockbuster Transformers in July, and as the young Indiana Jones in that franchise’s fourth film next year. Before then, catch him in this month’s killer chiller Disturbia.
Happy Birthday!
Legendary screen siren Marilyn Monroe would have been 80-years-old this month. Born Norma Jean Mortensen, the original blonde bombshell enjoyed a whirlwind career before her death in 1962, including an infamous romance with US president John F. Kennedy. Birthday bumps this month also go out to Elizabeth Hurley (42), Johnny Depp (44), Mark Whalberg (36), and Angelina Jolie (32).
