Today people are just as concerned about the clothes they put on their backs as the food they put in their bodies. As a result, ethical fashion is undergoing a radical revolution. Holly Shackleton tells us how we can all do our bit this summer
Knitted jumpers, tie-dye trousers and stiff, woven shirts are no longer the only items associated with fair-trade clothing. Across the globe, international fashion brands and high-end designers alike are working hard to introduce wearable and affordable ethical fashion to the high street. By choosing designs from recycled or renewable sources, or from companies that adhere to fair-trade principles, everyone can make a difference this summer.
Such is the increase in consumer awareness, designers such as Katharine Hamnett – famous in the 1980s for her political T-shirt slogans and ethical business policies – have re-established their place in shoppers’ hearts. Sourcing organic cotton and ensuring all dye, printing and materials are environmentally sound and sustainable, Hamnett is just one of many environmentally conscious designers with the bigger picture in mind, and one of the true advocates of ethical causes. As she stresses: “By insisting on organic cotton and fair pay for workers, and by paying 1% more for a T-shirt, you can change the world and make it a better, safer place.”
Working hard to improve the lives of producers in Asia, Africa and Latin America, brands such as People Tree offer this season’s must-have dresses with a conscience. Their paisley tea-and-silk sundresses are the perfect thing for keeping cool in between spots of sunbathing.
Topshop’s Design4Life Ghana Scheme has similarly vibrant summer dresses and camisoles with a twist; the designs are inspired by the batik fabrics of Ghana and made by local tribeswomen. Sweden’s H&M caters for summer staples with a small, organic cotton collection of classic vests and T-shirts.
If your holiday action is more about what goes on in the hotel room than on the beach, spoil yourself and your sweetheart with some Enamore lingerie. This ultra-feminine collection of hemp and silk underwear comes in exquisite black designs trimmed with elegant, creamy lace and ribbon ties, paired with racy and lacey French knickers.
For men this season it’s all about hitting the beach in bold, bright tees such as American Apparel Organics’ collection of multi-hued designs, all of which are 100% sweatshop free. The Oxfam-approved Belgian brand Made In Dignity boasts this summer’s most vibrant colours, while British based eco-brand Howies sports bright polo and gingham shirts that are ideal for lazy summer evenings on the terrace. All profits go to grass- roots social and environmental projects, so shoppers are free to indulge in a spot of guilt-free shopping.
Instead of accepting yet another plastic bag for your purchases, go green with Anya Hindmarch’s ‘I’m Not A Plastic Bag’ hold-alls. At only €7 a pop, Hindmarch’s alternative has already been snapped up by models and celebs alike.
No wardrobe would be complete this season without a pair of indigo jeans for a balmy night’s bar-hopping, and there are a huge number of ethical designs to choose from. Levi’s eco-friendly range promises 100% organic denim, with coconut shell buttons and a non galvanised metal fly. Howies and Loomstate do eco-friendly straight legs in daring indigo with a well-cut finish. The Armani Jean Collection – a selection of must-have denim trousers, jackets and shirts – is further proof that the big brands are going green. Team this look with Timberland’s eco-friendly footwear, made with vegetable-tanned leather and recycled rubber soles. The fact that Timberland will plant a tree for each pair of boots sold is even more reason to step out in style.
With such a huge array of designs, styles and sources on offer, ethical fashion has something for everyone. Show concern for the world we live in and step into the future.

Des marques comme People Tree offrent des motifs indiens et des robes d’été de soie à porter d’une plage à l’autre lors des grandes chaleurs. Design4Life Ghana Scheme, ces magasins de qualité, vendent aussi des robes légères aux motifs ardents inspirés des batik du Ghana, confectionnées par des couturières des tribus locales.
Et pourquoi ne pas vous faire plaisir avec de la lingerie Enamore ? Cette collection ultra-féminine de sousvêtements de chanvre et de soie produit des modèles exquis, de couleur noire, rehaussés de lacets crème et de liens en forme de rubans.
