Thermal baths have been part of Magyar tradition since the tribes arrived here in 896 – an interesting figure as it has dictated that the Parliament steps number exactly 96 and the cupola of the Parliament building is 96 metres high. Incidentally, Budapest bylaws state that no building can be higher than 96 metres, so that the Parliament will stand out forever on the skyline.
Krakow
On top of the Poland to-do list is the city of Krakow and its environs. The city is rich with palaces, castles and universities, including the one where Copernicus studied. The city also has the largest medieval central market square in Europe and is home to the cathedral where Pope John Paul II was a bishop before he was elected pope.
Vienna

Some things about Athens have changed since the Olympics, and some seem to have remained the same for ever. The city has become less of an obstacle course for tourists – the streets around Syntagma are now pedestrianised, although motorcycles and the occasional confused motorist still find their way into them. Gruff Athenians still engage in modern Socratic dialogue over parking spots, restaurant bills and driving infractions, and the Acropolis of course is still popping up unexpectedly – and thrillingly – above the rooftops.
The most rewarding way to visit Athens is on foot, despite the summer heat and the occasional hills – the Acropolis, Lykavittos, Filopappou – that demand to be climbed. Just walk away from the crowds to discover the real charm of a city that owes as much to the Middle East as to Europe. Athens is closer to Cairo than to Rome, closer to Baghdad than to Brussels, and it shows in the food, the music, the architecture and the way of life. It shares with Mediterranean neighbours such as Spain and Italy an innate desire to sleep in the afternoon, so expect most shops to shut down for a few hours’ siesta about one o’clock. It is a morning and evening city, so even though you’re in the same time zone, you should adjust your body clock accordingly.

Krakau
Bovenaan je Poolse agenda moet zeker Krakau en omgeving staan. De stad bulkt van de paleizen, kastelen en universiteiten, zoals die waar Copernicus studeerde. Krakau mag ook uitpakken met het grootste middeleeuwse marktplein in Europa en de kathedraal waar paus Johannes Paulus II bisschop was voor hij paus werd.
Wenen
Qua historische pracht en praal mag de stad van Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Strauss en Mahler zich in Europa best met Parijs meten. Maar zelfs met die rijke geschiedenis stelt Wenen zich toch vernieuwend op. De stad staat op het punt een moderne, multiculturele metropool te worden.
Na decennia van naoorlogs cultureel conservatisme krijgt het Wenen uit de 21e eeuw eindelijk wat haar toekomt!
Berlijn

Sinds de Olympische Spelen is er in Athene wel wat veranderd. Al bij aankomst merk je dat de nieuwe luchthaven schoon en efficiënt, en de onlangs aangelegde snelweg naar Athene snel en onberispelijk is. De stad is niet langer het obstakelparcours van vroeger. Norse Atheners voeren nog altijd filosofische dialogen over parkeerplaatsen, restaurantrekeningen en verkeersovertredingen. En de Akropolis duikt her en der nog steeds onverwacht en trots op boven de daken van de stad.
Te voet ziet Athene er nog het leukst uit, ondanks de zomerhitte en de te beklimmen heuvels (de Akropolis, Lykavittos, Filopappou). Verlaat de drukte en ontdek de onvervalste charme van een stad die evenveel aan het MiddenOosten als aan Europa te danken heeft. Athene ligt dichter bij Caïro dan bij Rome, dichter bij Bagdad dan bij Brussel. En dat merk je aan het eten, de muziek, de architectuur en de manier van leven. Net als bij haar mediterrane buren Spanje en Italië leeft hier het onbedwingbare verlangen te dutten in de namiddag. Hou er dus rekening mee dat de meeste winkels vanaf 13 uur een paar uur sluiten. Deze stad komt ’s morgens en ’s avonds tot leven. Ook al ligt ze in dezelfde tijdzone, toch best je biologische klok aanpassen dus!

Les bains thermaux ont toujours fait partie de la tradition Magyar depuis la venue de ces tribus en 896, une date par ailleurs très marquante car elle a dicté le nombre exact des marches du Parlement (96), ainsi que la hauteur de la coupole du bâtiment (96 mètres). En passant, on mentionnera que par décret d’Etat, Budapest ne peut construire aucun immeuble dépassant une hauteur de 96 mètres, afin que le Parlement se distingue à jamais dans le bleu du ciel.
Cracovie
La visite de Cracovie et de ses environs vient en tête des activités incontournables en Pologne. La ville regorge de palais, de châteaux et d’universités, dont celle où Copernic a étudié. On y trouve aussi la plus grande place de marché d’Europe, datant de l’époque médiévale. Cracovie abrite également la cathédrale où le Pape Jean-Paul II a été intronisé évêque avant d’être élu pape.
