Out and about in… Mitte, Berlin

Text Tabitha Lasley

Berlin is fast gaining cachet as a creative hub that’s seeing a sudden influx of international artists and celebrities – and Mitte is right in the thick of things. Needless to say, when Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie snap up an apartment in the area you know your neighbourhood’s on the up

START YOUR NIGHT… Shiro I Shiro

11 Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße, www.shiroishiro.com

Best for Leisurely drinks at the beginning of the night rather than a raucous coda to your evening. The serene surroundings mean you can catch up with friends properly, as opposed to yelling in each other’s ears.

Eat Sashimi of sea bream with truffle sauce.

Drink A bracing Ginger Ghio: ginger vodka with lime juice and sake.

While you’re here Keep an eye out for the celebs – Jude Law is said to like the sushi.

MOVE ON TO… Bebel Bar & Lounge

Hotel de Rome, 37 Behrenstraße, www.hotelderome.com

Best for Grown ups. The pared back décor, polished clientele and expertly executed cocktails tell you all you need to know about Bebel. This lounge attracts a restrained crowd of quietly dedicated drinkers.

Eat Grilled Tomino cheese with artichokes and honey vinaigrette.

Drink A Mango Caipirinha: mango, ginger, lime and Cachaça.

While you’re here Do your level best to try to catch some of the live music the bar occasionally stages.

FINISH UP AT… Solar

76 Stresemannstraße, www.solarberlin.com

Best for A bird’s eye take on the city. Perched on the 16th and 17th floor, Solar’s huge windows offer up a 270º view across Mitte and Potsdamer Platz.

Eat Fläming Hills saddle of venison with hazelnut potato dumplings and pear and root vegetables.

Drink A Pears Garden: Absolut pear vodka, blackcurrant liqueur and cranberry juice.

While you’re here Get the soundtrack. The bar has somehow managed to distil its notably broad music policy into a compilation CD, which is released this month.

Cocktail corner

Pear Vodka

February’s bitter temperatures and seemingly endless gloom are enough to turn anyone to drink. Unless of course, they’re provided with a timely reminder that spring is just around the corner. So what better excuse do you need to knock up an appropriately fresh fruit cocktail?

Grey Goose Poire-tini

Blend two parts Grey Goose pear vodka with one part apple juice. Add a tablespoon each of lemon juice, maraschino liqueur, amaretto and sugar syrup. Shake with ice, then strain into a martini glass and top with grapefruit zest and a slice of pear. Et voila! Spring in a glass.
