Make your next holiday a real learning curve.

Ben Mondy reports on five great skills-based breaks

DJ-ing London

As far as a crash course in Dj-ing goes, Music Everything really lives up to its name. This company’s unique course, based in London, teaches you all the skills to potentially become a top DJ, including techniques such as beat matching, mixing, sampling, synchronising, making drum loops, EQ-ing and the use of effects through soundcards. Don’t worry; while those terms may confuse you now, after the course, you’ll know what they all mean. After a thrilling day at the studios, there is always the option of a night out in some of the world’s paramount clubs, where you can experience DJ-ing on a professional level. The night out isn’t part of the course, but who wouldn’t take advantage of London’s fervid nightlife while it’s on your doorstep?

You can enrol on this course at any time on a one-to-one basis, over a single weekend. The course price is set at €422 (£319) for the weekend, which includes 10 hours of tuition time.

Gladiator school Rome

Was your last holiday just a little dull? Do you want more on your break than a bit of sun and a good book? Well, for those who really want to tackle something more exciting, why not head to Rome and live the life of the ancient gladiators, at an intensive and authentic gladiator school?

The Gruppo Storico Romana is a gladiator school situated in Rome, right in the heart of the city. Upon your arrival, you will be thrown straight into the semblance of ancient Rome and be decked out in bracelets of iron or leather, gloves, visors, metal collars lined with animal skin and leather tunics, just as they did thousands of years ago. If all that wasn’t enough, you are given a Roman name such as Morpheus or Spartacus, by the three instructors.

Your instructors, Nero, Spiticulus and Pertinax, are responsible for your training in ancient gladiatorial weapon usage, various fighting techniques, effective shield use, basic attack positions and battle improvisation. During combat original rules apply, however a few obvious exceptions have been employed to ensure your safety. For example, blows delivered to the head, neck or genitals result in immediate expulsion, not to mention possible jail time. The two-hour course for beginners costs only €45 per person, and if you get a proper taste for these ancient arts, more serious courses are available, all the way up to instructor status.

Salsa dancing (with Champagne tasting)
Barcelona

When it comes to finding a city to match the sensual energy, rhythm and fun of Salsa dancing, it’s pretty hard to go past Barcelona. Recognising this, the people at Why Don’t You have created the ultimate Salsa break in the city, incorporating dance lessons with nights out in the city’s hottest Salsa clubs, delicious meals in restaurants and social nights out which often last all night long.

In addition to the Salsa experience, you also get to take in this extraordinary city and all its funky architecture, brazen nightlife and friendly locals.

As if all that weren’t enough, the organisers will also throw in a Champagne tasting session, during which a host takes you through the history of Spanish Cava. Of course, the best way to do this is through the tasting. If the bubbles don’t fire up the Latin spirit within, then nothing will.

The three-day ultimate Salsa itinerary includes flights, bed and breakfast accommodation and the well thought out programme, with prices starting from €456.

Photography
Andalusia Coast

Do you want to take your love of photography to the next level? Maybe even be a professional? Or do you simply want to make sure your images from your amazing holidays are just as amazing? Well on the beautiful Spanish Andalusia coast, a photography course consisting of workshops and informal, straight-to-the-point tuition by professional photographer Simon Brown offers tips and advice for all levels.

The workshops are based out of the small fishing town of Barbate, a quaint village surrounded by pine forests, 100m cliffs, marshland and the Atlantic Ocean. Using this wonderful natural setting, the course takes in nature and landscape photography, while the nearby larger and colourful towns of Tarifa and Jerez provide opportunities for photographic studies of the towns and its peoples. There is also plenty of downtime available for you to leave the camera in its case and go and enjoy the fantastic beaches and bars.

It truly is an amazing part of the world, and to enjoy it through your ever-increasing mastery of the lens makes it all the more worthwhile. And just imagine the slideshow when you get home! The course lasts six days. Check out the website for current prices and availability.

Film making Florence

While for the budding filmmaker inspiration should never be a problem, staying among some of the greatest artistic and architectural milestones of the Renaissance sure should help. This is possible at the New York Film Making Academy summer camp located, a little confusingly, in Florence, Italy.

This programme enables you to write, produce, direct and edit your own film, as well as trying the various crew positions, all while living in and exploring the famously beautiful city of Florence for the duration of the four-week stay. At the conclusion of the course, you will get an authentic screening on the final night and a copy to take home to show friends, family and Hollywood movie moguls.

You are free to book your own accommodation depending on whether you have an indie or blockbuster budget, while the academy offers convenient and comfortable housing for film course students, which are supervised by a resident member of staff.

The four-week film making course in Florence starts on 29 June and finishes on 26 July, and will set you back something in the region of €3900.
