BEAUTY

Stay in shape the stylish way with our wellbeing and beauty round-up

Keep your cool

Clever cooling products mean there’s no need to get all hot and bothered this summer

Summer in the city can present a litany of problems for the discerning beauty buyer. When temperatures start to soar, the rich creams, heavy scents and thick foundations that saw us through winter will start to feel cloying on the skin and can congest sensitive complexions. Put a spring in your step with mattifying primers, fresh scents and light formulations packed with invigorating mint and menthol.

Bliss’s Minty Moisture Milk 1 (€32, blisslondon.co.uk) is made with pure peppermint oil to refresh sweltering summer skin.
L’Occitane’s Cooling Deodorant Stick 2 (€14, loccitane.com) is infused with verbena extract for a fresh and citrus-laden scent.
Nickel’s Body Cooler 3 (€23, nickel. fr) contains chamomile and ruscus to soothe sore muscles.
Ole Henriksen’s Pick Me Up-Face Mist 4 (€29,50, olehenriksen.com) hydrates skin with a gentle blend of rosehip and blueberry,
Korres’ Yoghurt Cooling Gel 5 (€23, korres.com) calms sunburn with natural lactose and sinks in straight away, so there’s no need to wait before getting dressed.
Philosophy’s Empowermint 6 (€21,40, philosophy.com) is a serious multitasker – imbued with sweet spearmint, it makes a zingy shampoo, shower gel or bubble bath.
Decleor’s Circulagel 7 (€33,50, decleor.com) tightens skin and salves swollen calves with its chilly gel formula.
Dermalogica’s Sheer Tint Redness Relief 8 (€38,50, dermalogica.com) counters flushed cheeks with a vivid green tint and protects with an SPF15.
By Terry’s Multi-Protective Cooling Bronzer 9 (€69, byterry.com) adds glow and sheen to cheekbones without clogging the pores.
Origin’s No Puffery 10 (€25,50, origins.com) hydrates and tightens the delicate skin around your eyes with a toning yeast extract. ■ Now a beauty classic, The Body Shop’s Cooling Foot Rescue Treatment 11 (€13, thebodyshop.com) revives tired tootsies quicker than you can say ‘foot rest’.
Freeze 24-7’s Skin Glacé 12 (€57,55, spacenk.co.uk) sloughs off dirt and purifies pores with a cleansing combination of soy protein and rice bran.
Espa’s Soothing Eye Lotion 13 (€36, espaonline.com) calms itchy eyes with cornflower and chamomile.
Ren’s Revivo-Tonic Cool Comfort Leg and Foot Gel 14 (€27, renskincare. com) contains caffeine to drain fluid and relieve swelling..

Exercise of the month

Rope yoga
Rope yoga is yet another modern twist on the ancient art of yoga. But in contrast with some more dubious innovations (disco yoga, anyone?), this one’s been fairly well received by yoga aficionados. Icelandic trainer Gundi Gunnarsson has devised a system that tones the abdomen, bottom and thighs, increasing core stability while releasing anxiety. It’s also found favour with taut-bodied stars like Sienna Miller. “It’s about toning and stretching rather than calorie burning, and it eases tension,” she says. Well, if it’s good enough for Sienna…

Four of the best: body scrubs

The best way to knock pre-holiday skin into shape is with a vigorous buffing. Thorough exfoliation will banish dry patches and improve skin tone. We see how four of the best treatments scrub up…

Ren’s Guerande Salt Exfoliating Body Balm (€27, www.renskincare.com) has a lovely, buttery texture and an invigorating minty scent. It leaves an emollient coat of oil on skin, so there is no need to moisturise afterwards.

Elemis’ Lime and Ginger Scrub (€57, www.elemis.com) is your best bet for serious sloughing. The sea salt will see off dry skin and it’s packed with high quality essential oils for a satiny finish.

Laura Mercier’s Almond Coconut Milk Scrub (€53, www.lauramercier.com) has a thick, grainy texture and such a sweet, soporific scent that it’s probably best left for bedtime.

Clarins’ Toning Body Polisher (€37, www.clarins.com) has an invigorating scent, so it’s best for mornings. Perhaps it’s the power of suggestion, but skin does seem firmer after using this a few times.
