Movies aren’t just fun to watch, they’ve inspired this summer’s must-have outfits as Veerle Windels reveals

American Gigolo

All fashionistas remember Julian Kay (the unforgettable Richard Gere) putting down ties to go with shirts and suits in his bedroom in the movie American Gigolo. But who remembers Michelle (Lauren Hutton) coming up to his room wearing only a trench-coat? Well it’s time to refresh your memory because the trench-coat is a must in today’s wardrobes, whether it’s your regular Burberry, a secondhand version or just a lookalike.

To Catch a Thief

Will Grace Kelly ever be forgotten? Probably not. Fans tend to come up with her perfect play in To Catch a Thief, a Hitchock movie from 1955 where her character Frances Stevens is allowed to play cat-and-mouse with John Robie (played by Cary Grant) on the beach in Cannes. Her beachwear is sleek and sexy, but then so are her elegant frocks. The halter-neck bathing suit that Kelly wore in the film is a must this season as are her elegant dresses and high heels for a night out.

The Talented Mr Ripley

The indulgent lifestyle of Dickie Greenleaf and his girlfriend Marge Sherwood inspire Tom Ripley to commit more than one deadly sin amidst the beautiful backdrop of 1950s Tuscany. Patricia Highsmith’s novel was turned into a movie in 1999 by director Anthony Minghella starring a bevy of beautiful actors such as Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cate Blanchett. Lots of fashion designers felt inspired by the film’s golden-hued glamour and edgy undertones, with its brooding atmosphere and sexy updates to the era’s jazzy sartorial classics. The result still resonates on the fashion scene today with Ivy League tops for men and romantic dresses for women – a 50s touch that’s here to stay.

Desire

What can we say about countess Madeline (played by Marlene Dietrich) in the movie Desire? That she’s a strong, heady woman perhaps, racing head-to-head with Gary Cooper’s Tom Bradley, the man with whom she falls in love. One thing is for sure: the countess’ wardrobe has long been a cave of wonder to fashion watchers – pantsuits for women (back in 1936!), beautiful evening gowns and chic accessories. Now that wardrobe is back on the scene, and high-waisted, wide-legged trouser suits for women are the talk of the town.

Sabrina

€167,50As the daughter of the Larrabee family chauffeur, Sabrina Fairchild (fashion icon Audrey Hepburn) is infatuated with flirtatious rich kid David Larrabee, but he hardly notices her. That changes when she comes back from Paris, and turns out to be an elegant, sophisticated young minx. But the newly upmarket Sabrina suddenly feels far more attracted to David’s uptight brother Linus. Audrey Hepburn is still one of the most quoted idols in the fashion world – a protégée of Hubert de Givenchy (although in this 1954 movie she was dressed by Edith Head). The atmosphere of Sabrina is felt in today’s shorts and shirts – elegant, sophisticated and with a touch of Paris.

The Virgin Suicides

When Sofia Coppola released The Virgin Suicides in 1999, nobody could have guessed that the saga of the five Lisbon sisters would be such an enticing adventure later quoted by designers and songwriters alike. Coppola evokes an insiders’ world of high-school drama – a dark, floating fantasy of beauty, youth and hidden sexuality. Perhaps it was the atmosphere of innocence lost that so enticed the fashion world. The atmosphere here is very David Hamilton, featuring schoolgirl beauty in colours like off-white and cream. See-through blouses, romantic prints and lace capture the magic.

Le cinéma n’est pas fait seulement pour être regardé. Cet été, de nombreux films ont constitué une source d’inspiration pour des collections de prêt-à-porter.

Le glamour aux nuances dorées, les tenues modernes sexy jusqu’à l’élégance vestimentaire des classiques…on dirait que The Talented Mr Ripley (le Talentueux  
M. Ripley) résonne encore aujourd’hui sur la scène de la mode, avec des polos Ivy League pour les hommes et des robes romantiques éternelles pour les femmes.

En 1954, Audrey Hepburn, icône de la mode, jouait Sabrina, la fille du chauffeur de la famille Larrabee. Elle tombe amoureuse du fils du patron de son père, oisif et coureur de jupons jusqu’à ce qu’elle rentre de Paris transformée en sublime effrontée, irrésistible. Cette atmosphère de Sabrina se retrouve à l’heure actuelle dans les shorts et les chemises – élégantes, sophistiquées, avec une touche de raffinement français.

La garde-robe de Marlène Dietrich en 1936 dans Desire a été très longtemps une mine d’or pour les observateurs du monde du stylisme avec ses costumes, ses magnifiques robes du soir et ses accessoires chic. Un style qui revient en force.

Pourra-t-on jamais oublier Grace Kelly? Dans To Catch A Thief en 1955 elle s’amuse sur la plage de Cannes dans une tenue sérieusement sexy, avec des pièces assorties pour le jour et le soir. Le top de son maillot de bain est un must cette saison.

Tous les fashionistas se souviendront de Richard Gere dans American Gigolo, mais qui se souvient encore de Lauren Hutton ne portant qu’un imperméable? Allons! Un petit effort de mémoire. Le trench-coat est aussi un incontournable de la garde-robe actuelle.

De glamour en sexy updates van kledingklassiekers bewijzen dat The Talented Mr Ripley weer springlevend is in de modewereld. Ivy League-truien voor mannen en romantische jurken voor vrouwen zijn vaste waarden.

In 1954 vertolkte mode-icoon Audrey Hepburn Sabrina, dochter van een eenvoudige chauffeur en verliefd op rijkeluiszoon David. Na een verblijf in Parijs is ze plots een verwaande maar stijlvolle jongedame. De shorts en shirts van nu stralen nog steeds die sfeer uit. Elegant, gesofisticeerd en mét dat vleugje Franse perfectie.

The Virgin Suicides van Sofia Coppola roept een wereld op van schoonheid, jeugd en verborgen seksualiteit. Een sfeer die aan fotograaf David Hamilton doet denken, met veel gebroken wit en crèmekleuren. Doorkijkbloezen, romantische jurken en kant zorgen voor de magie.

Marlene Dietrichs garderobe in Desire (1936) sprak lang tot de verbeelding van trendwatchers, met broekpakken, prachtige nachthemden en chique accessoires. Nu helemaal terug in!

En dan is er natuurlijk nog Grace Kelly. In To Catch A Thief uit 1955 dartelt ze op het strand van Cannes in heuse sexy outfits, met bijbehorende dag- en nachtkledij. Het bovenstuk van haar badpak is een echte must dit seizoen.

Modefanaten herinneren zich ongetwijfeld Richard Gere in American Gigolo, maar wie herinnert zich Lauren Hutton met alleen een regenjas om het lijf? Fris dan snel je geheugen op, want de regenjas is nu een absolute must!
