As the UK’s biggest design fair comes to London, Dominic Lutyens spotlights the movers and shakers to keep an eye on
Attracting up to 35,000 visitors, 100% Design is the UK’s biggest and best-known design fair, a magnet for interior designers, architects and anyone who loves design and is eager to size up the latest trends.
The 2007 trade fair takes place on 20-23 September at Earls Court, London, and is open to the public on Sunday 23 September. The event is now in its 13th year and has celebrated by appointing a new creative director, Tom Dixon, one of the UK’s most dynamic designers and champions of contemporary design.
Emmanuel Dietrich
Info Freelance designer Dietrich will be featured as part of the Ligne Roset stand in a new area called 100% Futures, a showcase of the best new international design talent. The stand will exhibit Ligne Roset pieces as well as work by emerging designers based in France.
Based in Hamburg and Paris Design Alster and Hans chairs Inspirations “The Hans chair reworks the shape and comfortable feel of the classic tubular-steel cantilevered chairs from the Bauhaus era by designers such as Mart Stam, Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe,” says Dietrich. “But my idea is to be anti-nostalgic and move things on. I kept the general shape of those chairs but used a more contemporary square-section tubing for the frames that’s angled slightly but still able to support the chair.
“The Alster chair was designed to mould to the human body. It’s named after the beautiful Lake Alster in the middle of Hamburg, and its curvy, body-embracing shape is supposed to look as fluid as water. At the same time, I wanted the chair to look dynamic and structured and not too shapeless.”
Available from Ligne Roset stores throughout Europe, including Belgium (www.ligne-roset.be), France (www.ligne-roset.fr), Germany (www.ligne-roset.de) and Italy (www.ligne-roset.it).
SoFar/SoNear
Info Designers Francesca Gasparotti and Luca Ferreccio Based in Milan Design Paysage Fiabesque rug Inspirations “This is one example of the high-end, handmade fabrics, rugs and furniture we make with a sustainable fair-trade focus. We employ artisans who, in addition to their income, benefit from working in a dignified, creative environment.
“We’re inspired by natural materials such as felt, silk and wool. We also use metals such as stainless steel, but mix them with ‘warm’ materials like silk and wool, and prefer soft-contoured shapes. We think eco furniture and homeware can be glamorous rather than, as is often supposed, drab. That’s why, with this rug, we’ve combined felt handmade in Nepal with handprinted white and silver motifs to create a frivolous effect. The rug coordinates with some similar fabrics and wallpaper.
“Our designs are influenced by a broad range of things: op art, especially the work of painter Victor Vasarely, the minimalist style of the Bauhaus designers, nature and the baroque style.” Available from SoFar/SoNear, Milan, ; Imprinting, Rome, ; MB Paola San Lorenzo, Turin, ; Selfridges, London, tel. ; Cameron Broom, London, .
Fromental
Info Designers Tim Butcher and Lizzie Deshayes, who between them have worked for Matthew Williamson, Philippe Starck, Paul Smith and Oscar de la Renta. Based in London Design Embroidered Paradiso wallpaper Inspirations “We’ve been inspired by reinventing a millennium-old technique of hand-embroidering and hand-painting wallpapers, practised in the Jiangsu province of China more than 2,500 years ago. But the design also relates to the way 18th-century European designers were influenced by Chinese design, which gave rise to the Chinoiserie craze.
“All our silk-backed wallpapers are bespoke and their motifs are non-repeating – they’re more like paintings than wallpaper. They come in panels, each using 14 different shades of the same colour thread to create the effect. Since this level of skilled craft has almost disappeared in Europe, we’ve chosen to locate the manufacturing in China – in Wuxi, the centre of the country’s silk industry. Our aim is to produce wallpapers of a beauty and skill not witnessed since the 18th and 19th centuries.”

Zaum
Info Designer Miguel Duarte is an architect who has recently ventured into furniture design.
Based in Lisbon Design Insider Desk and Interior Lounge Inspirations “The desk has been designed around the idea of folding and bending a piece of paper that’s a different colour on each side,” says Duarte. “When the folds have been made, the different coloured parts denote different areas with different functions. The ‘inside’ colour – red – indicates a storage area, while the grey ‘outside’ or external surface denotes the area you would work and write on. The Interior Lounge, which also plays with this two-tone idea, has a similar look.
“I prefer making pieces that radically change the space they’re in. My designs tend to be large-scale and have a sculptural quality to them. These include Gravitate Your Shelf, a shelving system that doubles as a room divider, and Workstation, a round-cornered computer table and chair.” Available from Zaum, Lisbon, , www.zaum.net
Sylvain Willenz Design Studio
Info Willenz graduated from the Design Products course at London’s Royal College of Art in 2003 and now designs furniture, lighting and products.
Based in Brussels Designs InnerTube lamp and Snottebel chandelier Inspirations “I’m primarily interested in experimenting with materials,” says Willenz. “I like versatile materials, organic-looking forms and an eye for detail and finish. I like to source inspiration from everyday objects and materials: old rubber tyres, Post-it notes, chewing gum. One of my favourite materials is rubber, which my pendant lampshade InnerTube is made of. It’s a soft, flexible rubber shade stretched over a glass tube. The black shade contrasts strongly with the white aura of light it emits.
“The Snottebel light is a decorative, ambient lamp made from garlands of LEDs mounted on an aluminium rod that has been dipped in semi-translucent white rubber. First of all, the aluminium rod is dipped in the rubber as a completely straight rod – this allows the design to be mass-produced. Only later is it bent into branch shapes, and the rubber forms a skin around the whole structure. It’s designed to be hung from a ceiling or a wall.”

Refer + Staer
Info Refer + Staer is Sofie Refer and Jakob Staer. Refer has experience in designing and manufacturing glass products, while Staer’s strength is more in administration and overseeing the design process.
Based in Copenhagen Designs Black Fiber and Sheherazade chandeliers Inspirations “The Black Fiber lamp is inspired by the silhouette of a classic, fringed pendant lamp but is given a futuristic twist. It’s made of fibre-optic lights, making the fringed part the actual source of light. The sparkling fibres create a transparent-looking form that produces an airy feeling.
“Sheherazade is inspired by The Book of One Thousand and One Nights, and is named after the heroine who saved her life by telling a the series of spellbinding tales. The glossy black shade contrasts sharply with its white interior. The bright white light makes the crystal drops shine all the more.”
