DESIGNER ACCESSORIES

Grand designs

With the advent of Xavier Delcour’s new ‘fashion room’ opening at the Royal Windsor Hotel in Brussels, there’s no better time to invest in some divine, design-led accessories…

The Royal Windsor Hotel Grand’Place, Brussels

Making a virtue out of a necessity is rarely stylish. The exception must be here, where there are 12, out of 266, oddly shaped rooms, which have been renovated by Belgium’s leading designers. The latest room to be completed is Xavier Delcour’s ‘Jewel Casket’, a pared-back bolthole decked out in black, white and silver.

Armani Privé Bois D’Encens

In an age when every designer rolls out a new perfume each year, there’s no longer any cachet in a bottle merely emblazoned with a big name. Armani’s Privé line comes with the highest distinction possible – the man himself never wears anything but Bois D’Encens, one of the four delicately crafted fragrances. A warm, woody blend, the scent has only five ingredients, and its stark simplicity stands out a mile against the usual style-over-substance offerings.

Furla boarding bag

Stringent customs regulations are the sworn enemy of in-transit elegance, with carefully packed carry-ons being callously upended, and scent, moisturiser and make-up routinely quarantined. In the interests of transparency, take Furla’s ingenious Boarding Bag with you. Completely see-through, it means your luggage can be inspected without being unpacked, leaving you to breeze through baggage check like a (chic) ship in full sail.

Roberto Cavalli RC305S

If the devil truly is in the detail, then it pays to spend on accessories. Conventional wisdom has it that good shoes, a beautiful bag and fantastic sunglasses can lift any outfit, and for the most part, this rule holds good. Splash out on this Swarovski-encrusted pair from Roberto Cavalli, and resist the temptation to categorise them as a charmingly antiquated, but ultimately pointless piece of I♥2001-esque nostalgia. They aren’t.

Paul Smith luggage tags

Doubtless your mother has advised you to tie a brightly coloured rag to your suitcase, so you can spot it among the amorphous mass of black and blue at baggage collection. But is your mother an iconic arbiter of classic, quintessentially English style? Exactly. Instead, flag up your fashionable credentials with some tan leather luggage tags embossed with the immediately identifiable Paul Smith swirl.
