Berlin – party city that’s open to anything (almost)

BERLIN

Berlin is Germany’s antidote to itself. Humorous, quirky, irreverent and innovative, but at the same time packed with a wealth of art and culture built up over centuries, the city is a celebration of all things extreme

Berlin is still comparatively cheap, making it a magnet for young people and artists, and giving it a vibrant counterculture. With all the young people taking advantage of affordable digs, the last thing you’ll be in Berlin is bored. Twenty years ago the city had an edgy pace to it, since living there was akin to a dare. While the tension of being an island in the middle of a communist country has been gone for more than a decade, there’s still something daring about Berlin. But ironically, Berliners are anything but uptight. They smoke French cigarettes in the bars, and they joke about falling asleep to the sound of a cosy techno beat. The Volksbühne, a people’s theatre founded back in 1914 by an association of workers, sums up Berlin’s attitude with their description of themselves as “an anti-embalmment theatre open to everything of interest, even if it doesn’t deal with theatre directly: rock music, video, tango, politicians, philosophers, maniacs, dentists – whatever.”

Underground city in Kreuzberg

Named after the postcode for Kreuzberg – Berlin’s radical quarter – SO36 at Oranienstrasse 190 has been one of the capital’s most important underground venues for over 25 years.
These days, it hosts a variety of gay and techno club nights as well as still booking the rawest, wildest alternative rock acts. Later check out Knaack – owned by the management of super-hard German heavy metallers Rammstein, Knaack at Greifswalder Strasse 224 combines a club with a selection of the best in underground and alternative music in its live concert hall.

The sweetest morning after

If you’ve made a long night of it, the only thing left to do in the morning is to have some life pummelled back into you. A perfect detox – massage, facials, etc. – can be indulged in at the Aveda Lifestyle Salon and Spa, Kurfürstendamm 26a – book in advance to avoid an extended hangover.

Brussels Airlines flies five times daily to Berlin Tempelhof, and once a day to Berlin Schönfeld, with an evening flight on Sundays. For info or to book, see the website at www.brusselsairlines.com
