Chic beaches

In summer, the beautiful people descend on the Mediterranean’s top resorts and put on a glittering fashion show. Tabitha Lasley shows us how it’s done

Palma de Mallorca

Who goes there Claudia Schiffer, Michael Douglas and wife Catherine Zeta Jones
Where La Cuchara in Palma. Won over by its richly flavoured organic tapas, Claudia Schiffer called it her “favourite restaurant in the world”. If you fancy spotting Claudia closer to home, head up the coast to Port d’Andratx. Her €8m mansion is just east of here, at Camp de Mar.
Style Low-key luxe: Pucci kaftans or printed wrap dresses slung over bikinis. Otherwise, loose linen trousers in sun-bleached colours worn with wide-brimmed straw hats.
Get the look Piel de Gallina (9A Iglesia de Santa Eulalia) is good for one-off pieces and good-quality vintage. Yvonne Rohe (16 Placa del Mercat) stocks grown-up labels including Diane von Furstenberg and Plein Sud.

Capri

Who goes there Mariah Carey, Hayden Panettiere, Lindsay Lohan and Valentino Garavani.
Where Lindsay’s hotel of choice is La Palma, while Valentino prefers the old-school elegance of the Capri Palace.
Style Channel Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow in The Talented Mr Ripley, which was filmed on the adjacent island of Ischia. For men, that means light linen suits, open-necked shirts in a palette of muted pastels and box-fresh loafers (worn without socks). For women, this translates as pretty patterned dirndl skirts, generously cut bikinis and wicker beach bags. Accessorise with a light golden glow – Gwyneth sports the merest sprinkling of freckles across her nose throughout the film.
Get the look Head to Capri’s most polished shopping street Via Camerelle for arbiters of classic Italian style such as Ferregamo, Gucci and Gianfranco Ferré.

Tel Aviv

Who goes there Madonna and Guy Ritchie, Will Smith, Anna Kournikova and Enrique Iglesias.
Where The David InterContinental played host to Madonna while she was here last year. Anna and Enrique hosted a Hanukkah party at the Tel Aviv Hilton. Incidentally, the beach outside the Hilton is the city’s best strip of sand if you’re looking to mix and mingle with Tel Aviv’s hot young things.
Style Most of Tel Aviv’s beaches have a backdrop of towering skyscrapers and pull in a younger crowd than the Med’s more venerable hotspots. This translates into an unrepentantly urban look: body-con shapes and brief-as-you-dare swimwear.
Get the look Banot (212 Dizengoff Street) is renowned for its bracingly modern designs – all bright colours, stylised cuts and fluid fabrics.

Saint-Tropez

Who goes there Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Uma Thurman, Penélope Cruz, Cindy Crawford, Bono.
Where The Caves du Roy nightclub at Hotel Byblos – if they can get in the door. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were turned away last summer, apparently because the VIP room was full.
Style What’s chic in Paris is drab in Saint-Tropez. Take your cue from Beyoncé and layer jewel-coloured wraps over bright bikinis, then team with huge sunglasses and more jewellery than is strictly necessary. With suntans, more is definitely more – that deep, matte bronze that’s deemed infra dig anywhere else is the shade you’re after.
Get the look Zoé, in the centre of town, has suitably glamorous swimwear – think animal prints, sequins and beading.

Sardinia

Who goes there Naomi Campbell, Donatella Versace and Margherita Missoni.
Where Donatella’s been spotted at the discreet Hotel Pitrizza. The rest of the Costa Smeralda’s celebrity contingent can be found swilling Cristal at either the Grand Hotel’s Nikki Beach Club or Flavio Briatore’s Billionaire Club in Porto Cervo.
Style Moneyed Eurotrash. Men should stick to Briatore’s off-duty uniform of cream Chinos and tan deck shoes, while women should aim for a sort of dressed-down Nancy Dell’Olio: jewel-encrusted flip-flops, big hair and oodles of Missoni.
Get the look Minimalism is a dirty word here. Go for unashamedly glamorous labels like Versace and Bulgari (both in Porto Cervo).
