Whatever the colour of your nation’s flag, July is definitely the month for some red, white and blue
Text Tabitha Lasley
Imagine you’re rolling in money
at The Blue Bar, LondonWith our American friends hoisting the Stars and Stripes on 4 July and our Gallic brethren celebrating Bastille Day 10 days later, it would be churlish not to raise a glass to them. b.there! finds three of Europe’s most colourful bars
Bar Rouge COPENHAGEN First Hotel Skt Petri, 22 Krystalgade, tel.
Eat Bar Rouge doesn’t actually serve food, but if you’re peckish you can pop to the hotel’s restaurant, Bleu, for white asparagus with hand-shelled shrimps, followed by green tea and coconut crème brûlée.
Drink Blood & Sand – Johnnie Walker Black Label, Martini Rosso and fresh orange juice.
Do Dance. The bar has roster of guest DJs, so it’s positively encouraged. Don’t Get there too late. Bar Rouge is housed in a fairly small space, and can get packed at weekends.
White Bar BERLIN Bangaluu, 30 Invalidenstrasse, tel. 7
Eat Ragout of sweet potatoes and shiitake mushrooms.
Drink A classic champagne cocktail – champagne spiked with brandy, sugar and Angostura bitters.
Do Leave room for dinner – taking its cue from old-fashioned supperclubs gaining currency in Amsterdam and Rome, the bar serves 10-course meals. Don’t Come here expecting the sort of ribald, anything-goes atmosphere you’d get at some of the city’s grimier clubs. Having said that, this is Berlin, so you can still wear trainers.
The Blue Bar LONDON The Berkeley, Wilton Place, tel.
Eat Queen scallops with wasabi and lime vinaigrette followed by roasted pears in caramel and ginger.
Drink The Berkeley – cognac, Angostura bitters and Grand Marnier topped with Laurent-Perrier champagne.
Do Keep an eye out for passing celebrities. It has been reported that Madonna “adores” the place.
Don’t Whip out your copy of Socialist Worker. This sort of thing antagonises the bar’s core clientele of old-money do-nothings, apparently.
Cocktail corner Red, White & Blue
Even if you’re not about to get all misty-eyed over ‘La Marseillaise’, July’s soaring temperatures are as good an excuse as any to get into the libertarian spirit of things. And what better cocktail to toast the forthcoming festivities with than a variegated glass of Red, White & Blue?
Pour 100ml grenadine into a shot glass. Float (gently pour over the back of a bar spoon) 100ml peach schnapps on top of the grenadine, then float a further 100ml of blue curaçao on top of the schnapps.
