Barcelona
Benicàssim

Taking place on the Costa del Azahar, south of Barcelona, and also known as ‘Glastonbury with sun’, Benicàssim falls halfway between a festival and a holiday camp. This year’s programme includes Morrissey (should all that sun prove too uplifting), The Kills, Calvin Harris, Róisín Murphy and Gnarls Barkley. fiberfib.com

Oslo The Scream and Madonna – Revisited This summer sees the first exhibition of Edvard Munch’s The Scream and Madonna since they were stolen in 2004. The theft made its mark on both pieces, but they’re now restored to their former glory – you can learn more about their conservation at the show. munch.museum.no

Ghent Jazz Festival

Ghent’s annual festival lasts 10 days this year, and while the first half of the programme deals with jazz in its purest form, the second focuses on fusion. Erykah Badu will be headlining, aided and abetted by luminaries such as Herbie Hancock and Buscemi Big Band. gentjazz.com

11-13

Bristol Wine & Food Fair

Local produce in south-west England takes some beating, thanks to its orchards and lush farmland. For three days you’ll be able to sample the best the area has to offer, including hundreds of wines, and watch some of Bristol’s top chefs in action. bristolwineandfoodfair.co.uk

Nice Jazz à Juan

For nearly 50 years, the seaside town of Antibes Juan-les-Pins near Nice has staged what claims to be Europe’s oldest jazz festival, attracting stars such as Ray Charles and Ella Fitzgerald. This year’s acts include Nicole Slack-Jones and James Morrisson. antibes-juanlespins.com

Florence Painting Light Held in Palazzo Strozzi, Painting Light brings together 60 works by some of the most important impressionists and uses modern techniques to explore how Matisse, Van Gogh, Signac and others suffused their paintings with light and air. Gorgeous stuff. palazzostrozzi.org

Monaco Reines d’Egypte The Grimaldi Forum, an easy day trip from Nice, hosts Europe’s largest exhibition of Egyptian artefacts, featuring more than 250 antiquities and pieces of art. The show focuses on women, such as Cleopatra and Nefertiti, who left their indelible stamp on the era. grimaldiforum.mc

19-20

London Lovebox

Groove Armada’s diminutive festival pitches up in Victoria Park once more, bringing with it a stellar line-up including Goldfrapp, The Flaming Lips and Jack Penate. Roni Size and Lethal Bizzle will also make an appearance, so wear your dancing shoes (eg trainers). lovebox.net

Knokke Cavalia If your little one is at that I-want-a-pony stage, this is probably best avoided. Otherwise, the celebration of all things equine – involving some 60 horses, from solid Percherons to showy Appaloosas – in the Belgian seaside resort makes for a perfect family evening. cavalia.net

Copenhagen Macbeth Famous the world over as the location of Hamlet, Kronborg Castle plays host to another Shakespeare tragedy this summer – Macbeth. This is a radical interpretation by Polish ensemble Teatr Biuro Podrózy – think motorcycles, witches on stilts and lots of blood. hamletsommer.dk
