Rite on: Europe’s strangest festivals

From the archaic to the downright odd, many of Europe’s oldest festivals are alive and well. Kamin Mohammadi rounds up five events that bring a whole new meaning to the words ‘festival season’

26-27 July Moesgaard Viking Moot, Aarhus, Denmark

Held to mark the feast day of St Olaf, patron saint of Norway, Moesgaard Viking Moot (left) began life as a fair that dates back to the Middle Ages and possibly even to Viking times.

What started as a market, where people came to learn ancient Nordic handicrafts, is now one of the most important Viking festivals in the world, attracting 600 Vikings and 20,000 people from Aarhus alone. For one day, Moesgaard Beach is transformed into a Viking settlement, with archery practice, masses of market stalls selling iron, wood, leather, silver, wool, amber, glass and willow goods, as well as slow-roasted meat that’s been seared over open fires.

But the highlight of the festival is undoubtedly the pitched battles that take place twice a day. Viking warriors cross heavy swords in front of baying crowds, while horsemen mounted on Icelandic ponies – direct descendents of Viking horses – parade their costumes and armour before plunging into the battle. visitaarhus.com

10 August La Pourcailhade, Trie Sur Baïse, HautesPyrénées, France

Each August, the town of Trie Sur Baïse in south-west France pays tribute to all things porcine with La Pourcailhade (right), a festival organised by the aptly named Brotherhood of the Pig.

Trie Sur Baïse and its surrounds have long been one of the largest pig-rearing areas in France (and also one of its most dedicated markets), and the festival is in part recognition of the humble hog’s importance to the region. Stalls displaying all manner of pork goods line the streets, and one festival saw the creation of a world-beating 500m sausage.

There’s music and dancing, too, but by far the most popular events are the competitions. There are piglet races, pitting the speediest runts against each other, pork sausage and black pudding eating contests and a pig-related costume parade for children. The most prestigious competition of all is the Cri du Cochon, in which contestants must imitate the cries of a pig at specific junctures in its life, from birth and feeding to the squeaks that accompany piggy reproduction. pourcailhade.com

2 July and 16 August Palio, Siena, Italy

It’s hard to believe that a race that lasts all of two minutes can inspire so many weeks of eager anticipation. But Siena’s Palio, the fast and furious horse race held since the Middle Ages between the city’s many contrade (districts), inspires such fierce rivalry that up until the day of the race, people from one contrada won’t set foot in another.

The festivities kick off three days before each Palio, with banquets, parades and blessings of the horses, culminating in a series of grand feasts held on the streets of the city. On race day itself, the crowds who pile into the vast seashell-shaped Piazza del Campo witness perhaps the most intense two minutes of their lives, as an explosion of cheering and shouting greets the winner, and a high state of excitement lingers long after the race is over. ilpalio.org

5-7 July L’Ardia di Santu Antine, Sedilo, Sardinia, Italy

High above the small town of Sedilo stands a simple church consecrated to Saint Constantine (Santu Antine). Every summer, this unassuming building is the focus of the wildest religious festival in Sardinia – L’Ardia.

Ostensibly held to commemorate Constantine’s victory over Maxentius in 312AD, the horse race’s wild quest for a flag is said to symbolise the triumph of Christian values. In reality the festival, which dates back to pre-Christian times, is a chance for the men of Sedilo to show off their riding skills.

Starting at the town square, then progressing to the church, the route is lined with stalls selling roast suckling pigs for the thousands of locals. The standard bearer sets the pace and the other horsemen gallop to overtake him, something that two flanking flag bearers do their level best to prevent. No one wears protective clothing and the growing sense of danger is augmented by the gunshots that ring out as the riders race by.

The explosive atmosphere spreads to the crowd, heightened by the fact that they can’t stray too close to the course – the path is narrow and an overexcited horse can cause havoc and even death. At the final turn, the sea of bystanders opens up to let the riders through as they stage a hair-raising race downhill. July/August Festas do Mar, Sao João do Estoril Beach, Cascais, Portugal

Paying honour to Portugal’s proud maritime tradition, the Festival of the Sea is held every year in Cascais, a beautiful beach resort 40 minutes from Lisbon popular with hip young things who pile in from the capital at weekends.

The festival includes a procession of Our Lady of the Seafarers, where colourfully costumed festival-goers carry an effigy of the Virgin Mary through the town to the beach. At night, fireworks light up the shore and traditional Portuguese folk songs – fado – are performed. The fun and games progress with a bizarre contest that sees a captive mouse released and bets placed on which hole it will choose to run down.

This being southern Europe, festivities wouldn’t be complete without a bull – or in this case, several – which are sent careering down the beach. Any local lad with enough courage (or beer) inside him to try to grab the horns wins a prize: the traditional Portuguese delicacy, dried salted cod. estorilcoast-tourism.com

FR Rites vivants: les festivals les plus étonnants d’Europe

Le Palio à Sienne est organisé le 2 juillet et le 16 août. Cette rapide et sauvage course de chevaux inspire une telle rivalité entre les contrade (quartiers médiévaux) de la ville que jusqu’au jour fatidique, la population d’une contrade ne mettra pas le pied dans une autre. Les festivités sont lancées trois jours avant chaque Palio et le jour de la course, les spectateurs s’empilent sur la Piazza del Campo pour témoigner des deux minutes sans doute les plus intenses de leur vie. ilpalio.org

L’Ardia di Santu Antine a lieu à Sedilo, Sardaigne, Italie, du 5 au 7 juillet. A cette occasion, les hommes démontrent leurs talents de cavaliers en faisant une course spectaculaire depuis la place centrale de la ville jusqu’à l’église de Saint Constantin. Festas do Mar rend honneur à la grande tradition maritime du Portugal sur la plage de Sao João do Estoril, à Cascais, chaque année en juillet et août (les dates exactes varient). Le festival se compose d’une procession à Notre Dame, des marins déambulant dans la ville et un concours bizarre où des paris sont lancés sur le trou par lequel une souris s’enfuira. Elk jaar in augustus brengt Trie Sur Baïse in Zuidwest-Frankrijk, een van de grootste gebieden voor varkenskweek in Frankrijk, met La Pourcailhade een eerbetoon aan de roze diertjes. Hoog aangeschreven staan de wedstrijden, waaronder Cri du Cochon, waarin deelnemers de kreten van varkens in hun verschillende levensfases nadoen, van de geboorte en het zogen tot de schreeuw van parende varkens. In Siëna kun je op 2 juli en 16 augustus Palio bijwonen. De razendsnelle en woeste paardenrace lokt zo’n sterke rivaliteit uit tussen de contrade (districten) van de stad dat tot op die dag mensen van één contrada geen voet op de andere zetten. De feestelijkheden gaan drie dagen voor elke Palio van start. Op de dag van de race zelf trekken hordes toeschouwers naar Piazza del Campo om misschien wel de meest spannende twee minuten van hun leven mee te maken. ilpalio.org

Ardia di Santu Antine vindt plaats van 5 tot 7 juli in Sedilo, op het Italiaanse Sardinië. De mannen van het plaatsje spreiden hun rijvaardigheden tentoon terwijl ze van het dorpsplein naar de kerk van San Constantino racen. De feestelijkheden worden afgesloten met speenvarken, bier en wijn … als iedereen veilig is teruggekeerd, wel te verstaan! sardegnaturismo.it

Festas do Mar brengt hulde aan Portugals trotse zeetraditie op het strand van Sao João do Estoril in Cascais, en dat elk jaar in juli en augustus (de precieze data variëren). Het festival pakt uit met een processie door de stad ter ere van Onze Lieve Vrouw van de Zeevaarders en een bizarre wedstrijd waarin gewed wordt in welk hol een muis zal rennen.
