The ultimate hotels for the discerning traveller who wants a truly special place to sleep in style

Text Tabitha Lasley, Tim White

The Townhouse Hotel NEWCASTLE

1 West Avenue, Gosforth, tel. , www.thetownhousehotel.co.uk

Nestled off the high street in the elegant suburb of Gosforth, The Townhouse feels miles away from Newcastle’s boisterous city centre. Owners Cathy Knox and Sheila Armstrong have cleverly combined the classic with the contemporary, restoring the building to its original period grandeur while fitting each of the 10 rooms here with limestone bathrooms, plasma screen TVs and high speed Wi-fi connections. No two rooms are the same, each door unveiling a different, and equally stunning look; from the rococo Lavish Room decorated in dusky pinks to the Exotic Rainforest Retreat, with its palette of fresh lime, orange and chocolate. Our pick? The Opulent Room, decked out in richly patterned black and purple wallpaper, with black-lacquered antique furniture and a huge bed with lots of cushions. From €81 for a standard room. TL

Be Manos BRUSSELS

Square de l’Aviation 23-27, tel. , www.bemanos.com

This boutique hotel’s 1920s façade belies the retro sense of style inside, where you’ll find coloured pouffes, black stone flooring and iconic ‘S’ chairs from Danish design guru Verner Panton. The monochrome tones carry through into the bedrooms, all of which are spacious design dens, boasting original black-and-white portrait photography, smoked Plexiglass furniture and big bathrooms. If you do manage to drag yourself out of the vast bed with its leather-headboard, then you’re only a short trip away from Brussels’ hottest restaurants and attractions. But, then again the hotel’s own glam-ridden Belgian eatery and rooftop cocktail bar only make it harder to leave. From €150 for a standard room. TW
