With plenty of culture at cut price rates, Warsaw is swi ly becoming the thinking person’s city break of choice. Michelle Smith shows us round

From the pretty, pastel coloured old town to the cool, creative hub of Praga, Warsaw is a sightseer’s dream. The trouble is packing it all in. Warsaw’s sights tend to be grouped together in several blocks or streets, and these little areas of interest often sit at opposite ends of the city from one another. The trick is to plot your movements with military precision.

Day One

09:00 Start the day with breakfast at Atrio Restaurant (23 al. Jana Pawła II, tel. ) which does a choice of Polish, North American and British food. Go for the pancakes served with Canadian maple syrup and the delightfully fresh fruit.

10:30 For those who enjoy walking, a Tour of Jewish Warsaw is possible to do in a single morning. The Monument to the Ghetto Heroes, located on the corner of ul. Zamenhofa and Anielewicza, is a logical starting point. It’s an eloquent symbol: the granite on which the monument rests was purchased by the Nazis from the Swedish government in 1942 and was originally intended to be used as a massive arch to the victory of the Third Reich.

From the Monument, follow the large black Memorial Route blocks to the Umschlagplatz at the corner of ul. Stawki and Dzika, where a wall on which 330 Jewish first names are inscribed (in alphabetical order from Abel to Zanna) represents the 300,000 plus Warsaw Jews who passed through this place on their way to the death camps.

From here, it’s about a 20-minute walk to the Jewish Cemetery (49/51 ul. Okopowa), which is currently run by one of Władysław Szpilman’s relatives (Szpilman’s story of survival was documented in the award-winning film The Pianist).

A short taxi ride away is the Warsaw Rising Museum (79 ul. Grzybowska); probably the best museum in Poland.

14:00 After such a draining morning, most visitors will feel the need for some refreshment, so head by tram or taxi for the city’s decadent zone: the ul. Chmielna and Nowy Swiat area. Indulge in a late lunch at Rodeo Drive (2 ul. Chmielna, tel. ), which serves the best steak in the city.

16:00 The streets between ul. Chmielna, Nowy Swiat and Pl. Trzech Krzyzy are a label lover’s mecca, lined with names like Emporio Armani (7 ul. Nowy Swiat), Burberry (3 Pl. Trzech Krzyzy) and high-end Polish fashion house Forget-me-not (15 ul. Chmielna).

19:00 Drop into Sense Cafe (19 ul. Nowy Swiat) for amazing fusion cuisine; try the sushi with wasabi sorbet and quench the fire with a frosty cocktail or two.

21:00 As the name suggests, Organza Shot Bar (4 ul. Sienkiewicza), specialises in shots. Adventurous travellers must check out the interlocked and nameless bars that can be reached through the courtyard of 22 ul. Nowy Swiat – this is Warsaw’s nightlife underbelly, where the beer is plentiful and the music is deafening.

Day Two

09:00 See off your hangover at Dom Literatury (87/89 ul. Krakowskie Przedmiescie) for fresh marmalade, piping hot coffee and a stunning view of the old town.

10:30 Head down the stairs at ul.

Kamienne Schodki and grab a tram to the Praga district’s Koneser Vodka Factory (27/31 ul. Zabkowska), which has been operating since 1897 and offers tours (and samples) every day from 8am to 1pm.

13:00 Sample Polish cuisine like bigos (stew with cabbage, smoked meat and forest berries) at Honoratka (14 ul. Miodowa), where Chopin used to dine.

14:30 Spend the afternoon strolling through the old town, starting with the Royal Castle (4 pl. Zamkowy), before wandering the cobblestone streets to the Rynek (Market Square) itself to visit the Historical Museum of Warsaw (42 Rynek Starego Miasta), where the city’s long life and turbulent times are beautifully displayed. And do pose in front of the Syrenka (Mermaid) in the middle of the Rynek; she’s the city’s symbol.

18:00 Head back to central Warsaw and visit the viewing platform at the Palace of Culture (1 pl. Defilad). The observation deck is open until 8pm daily (much later in the summer months), and offers a spectacular panoramic view over the whole of the city and beyond.

20:00 For something casual, go to Chłopskie Jadło (1 Pl. Konstytucji, tel.
), a rustic Polish restaurant that serves up huge portions of traditional food at amazing prices. Start with the smalec (fried lard) on freshly baked bread before moving on to placki (potato pancakes) and finishing up with sernik (cheesecake).

21:30 Drink in style at elegant NoBo (58a ul. Wilcza), where guests sip champagne while reclining on beds.

00:00 For a walk on the wild side, start at Drink Bar (52/54 ul. Wspólna) aka ‘Vampire Bar’. Nothing fancy here; it’s dark, smoky and very popular. Standing-room-only popular, in fact. End the evening dancing at Pod Gwiazdami (85 ul. Marszałkowska), a rooftop club that is literally under the stars, with a great outdoor terrace.

Where to stay

» Central Warsaw The InterContinental (49 ul. Emilii Plater, tel. , warsaw. intercontinental.com, rooms from €105/PLN 465) is in a great location and offers impeccable service.

For those who want to stay in the centre, but who are on a budget, make a beeline for Nathan’s Villa Hostel (24/26 ul. Piekna, tel.
, nathansvilla.com, rooms from €36/PLN 160).

» ul. Chmielna Area Chic, discreet and luxurious, Residence Diana (13a ul. Chmielna, tel. , residencediana.com, rooms from €180/PLN 794) is aimed at the travelling CEO.

» Old Town The great views at the Dom Literatury (87/89 ul. Krakowskie Przedmiescie, tel. , fundacjadl.com, rooms from €50/PLN 220) come at a price; no lift, and just so-so customer service. But for many visitors, it’s still worth it.

On the other hand, if you don’t want to sacrifice your creature comforts, then stay at Le Regina (12 ul. Koscielna, tel. , leregina.com, rooms from €300/PLN 1,300), the old town’s fabulous boutique hotel.

14.30 h Passez l’après-midi dans la vieille ville. Démarrez votre parcours par le Château Royal (4 pl. Zamkowy), rejoignez ensuite Rynek (Place du Marché) et le Musée d’Histoire de Varsovie (42 Rynek Starego Miasta).

20 h Chłopskie Jadło (1 Pl. Konstytucji, tél. ) est un restaurant polonais rustique qui offre une cuisine traditionnelle à des prix incomparables.

21.30 h Prenez un verre dans le bar stylé NoBo (58a ul. Wilcza).

24 h En fin de soirée, passez au Drink Bar (52/54 ul. Wspólna), un antre sombre, enfumé et très fréquenté. Terminez en beauté, en allant danser au Pod Gwiazdami (85 ul. Marszałkowska), un club situé sous les toits.
