In the diary

Whatever your musical tastes, there’s a festival to suit this month – plus lots of other events to keep you busy

Text Jeremy Parkinson

1 July – 27 September
Antwerp Chris Burden

Chris Burden changed the face of visual art in the 1970s, when performances such as Shoot and Trans-fixed saw him shot in the arm and ‘crucified’. Middelheimmuseum’s retrospective looks back over 30 years of his work. Look out for the Beam Drop Antwerp sculpture, constructed in front of an audience.

1 July – 22 August
Athens
Athens & Epidaurus Festival

See a concert in the Odeon of Herodes Atticus or a play in the ancient Epidaurus theatre as part of this festival, which incorporates theatre, music, dance, art and workshops. It runs all summer, so you’ve got dozens of events to choose from.

1 July – 3 September
Prague
Summer Shakespeare Festival

A festival dedicated to the most famous playwright in the English language, the only difference being that the majority of the performances are in Czech or Slovak. Proof, if proof were needed, of the universal nature of Shakespeare’s work.

Budapest
Summer Music Festival

Also known as Budafest, this series of concerts is one the most popular events on the Hungarian capital’s summer calendar. The programme is mainly classical, with performances of Verdi’s Rigoletto and Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia among the highlights.

The world’s most famous bike race reaches Marseille for the third of its 21 stages. Head to the city’s old port to see the cyclists set off, or find them 196.5km later in the town of La Grande-Motte. The tour ends on the 26 July in Paris, on the Champs-Élysées.
