Make a splash in the latest beachwear
Dirk Bikkembergs’ men’s swimwear collection is the perfect marriage of designer fashion and functional comfort. Featuring stylish wave-print detailing, each pair of shorts is available in a variation of lengths and colours, and comes expertly lined in a nylon-Lycra blend that allows the fabric to keep its shape and colour as you hit the surf. To really make a splash, opt for a matching Dirk Bikkembergs beach towel, flip-flops and sun cap, housed in a stylish Dirk Bikkembergs nylon beach bag.
Jil Sander ventures into the world of fine jewellery
As an advocate of purity and fine lines, news that Jil Sander’s creative director Raf Simons was launching a fine jewellery line was met with wary disbelief. Yet the collection of rings, bracelets and necklaces, produced in conjunction with Italian jeweller Damiani, has proved an instant hit. Made from white and yellow gold and featuring diamond, amethyst, quartz and Tahitian pearl adornments, the earrings and necklaces mimic tribal spears, reflecting the sophisticated and luxurious world of Jil Sander.
Grab an exclusive bite of Adam Kimmel while you can
You can now buy an exclusive piece of Adam Kimmel online at thecorner.com. The New York-based designer has joined forces with contemporary artist Kon Trubkovich – who also inspired his spring/summer 2009 show – for this slick limited-edition T-shirt. Available in white, navy or black, each shirt features a print of a vintage Californian number plate, making it the perfect choice for that summer road trip.
Ward off the sun’s harmful effects with Rodial’s range
Recently, there has been a move to reposition suncreams as deluxe beauty products rather than staid methods of sun protection, and Rodial is the latest company to get in on the act. This summer sees its hardworking Skinny Beach range hit the shelves, which includes an SPF15 lotion that doubles as a contour-refining cream, alongside multitasking supplements that boost the skin’s UV protection while burning fat.
Looking for baby-blue brogues or snakeskin loafers? Then Elsa is the label for you
For forward-thinking accessories, Antwerp’s Elsa is a must-stop shop. Now in it’s fifth season, the label is the brainchild of former Dries Van Noten and Maison Martin Margiela shoe designer Els Proost and Angelo Penazzato, formerly of Costume National and Hussein Chalayan. With such a pedigree, it’s little surprise the label’s shoes aren’t for the faint-hearted. While craftsmanship and comfort remain paramount, amusing twists include mottled marble printed courts, distressed paint-stained loafers with snakeskin detailing, baby-blue brogues with snakeskin toecaps and chocolate-brown desert boots with a creamy mottled finish.
Cathy Pill proves she’s one to watch on the catwalk
Belgium’s reputation for launching fresh and exciting fashion talent continues to thrive, as proved by young Brussels-based designer Cathy Pill. A graduate of the prestigious ENSAV of La Cambre, Cathy cut her fashion teeth as an intern at AF Vandervorst and Vivienne Westwood, before winning prizes for her graduate collection, including sponsorship from the Pierre Bergé Yves Saint Laurent foundation.
Cathy’s debut collection for spring/summer 2006 met with international acclaim, with rave reviews from the International Herald Tribune, Le Monde and US Vogue. For spring/summer 2009, she worked around the idea that the dress is the most important item in a woman’s wardrobe. Her collection honed her use of graphic painterly prints and drapes, with a collection of cosmic wrap dresses, tight body-con minis, ethereal tunics and bias-cut tops in galaxy-inspired prints, to produce something that was timeless yet unmistakably modern. Watch out for one of Belgium’s most exciting new exports.
Sign up for a bespoke bag at Delvaux. The world’s oldest leather goods manufacturer is opening its headquarters in Brussels, where you can not only watch the brand’s designers and craftsmen at work but also guarantee the exclusivity of your bag by choosing your own leather or hide. Now that Veronique Branquinho has taken over Delvaux’s creative helm (after the sad demise of her own label), this is an exciting opportunity to own an authentic piece of Branquinho cool.
If there’s one fashion item you should invest in this summer, it’s a blazer. To instantly update your wardrobe, bypass office black and opt for a brightly coloured jacket for the height of summer chic.
This season, Alexander Wang went fluoro with a tropical turquoise woollen suit jacket and matching shorts, while Phillip Lim’s over-sized linen blazer in baby pink with contrasting black buttons is one part Miami Vice, one part French Riviera glam. Can’t afford the real thing?
