Say goodbye to trawling the high street for somewhere to eat a er you’ve finished your shopping. Carolijn Domensino discovers the Belgian stores that provide sustenance in-house

When you go shopping in Belgium today, you’re in for a bit of a surprise. Eating in-store has become as much a part of the shopping experience as purchasing clothes, furnishings and books. A number of boutiques in the country’s major cities now house bars and eateries where you can take respite from shopping to enjoy a revitalising glass of champagne, a dish of sushi or even a three-course dinner. From Antwerp to Diest, here are some of our favourite boutiques where you can shop and eat.

Cook and Book

While away several hours in this popular bookstore, restaurant and gallery. Whether you’re after the latest magazine, comic or book then Cook and Book with its funky design and retro furnishings is the place to go in Brussels. The menu features a delicious selection of soups, salads and vegetarian dishes.

Verso

A mainstay on Antwerp’s fashion scene, Verso is an über-trendy clothes store with a restaurant, bar and terrace. While deciding on which stylish garment to purchase, why not feast on dishes such as red fish filled with a tagliatelli of cucumber, a rack of lamb with vegetables or fresh pasta. If you’re not in the mood for food, just take a pew at the bar and order a martini.

Oilily

Oilily’s new store in Antwerp is the company’s flagship boutique and is housed in what was formerly a bank – the changing rooms were the bank’s vault. Parents and children can browse the rails of brightly coloured clothing before heading for a bite to eat in the equally colourful in-store café, where kids are actively encouraged to draw on the bar with chalk. If you want to power up before you shop, the Oilily breakfast is highly recommended.

Hospital and The Glorious

Don’t be put off by the slightly unnerving name of this shop-cum-restaurant-cum-b&b. Hospital is a relative newcomer on Antwerp’s shopping scene. Achingly cool, it’s housed in a former stable and decorated with patterned tiles and reclaimed furniture. Fashionistas can take their pick from rail upon rail of designer names, with Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacobs and Sona Rykiel all putting in an appearance. The Glorious (a diminutive Italian apérobar) is located in the front of the building and is the perfect spot to sip a cocktail in your new designer frock. The building also houses a luxury bed and breakfast.

If you want all the literary atmosphere of a library but not the silence, you can browse around De Dry Coppen to find a good book then sink into a luxurious chair with a hot cup of coffee before buying. If you’re feeling peckish, there’s also a good selection of pastries – just be careful not to mess up the book with your dirty hands.

In the centre of Ghent you can snoop through this charming antique shop while sipping a cup of coffee, enjoying a glass of fresh juice or a flute of bubbling champagne. Those with a sweet tooth can enjoy homemade petits fours, ice cream and pies before stocking up on art-deco furniture and vintage accessories.

This new trendy clothing store, which features its own lunch bar, is situated not far from Brussels in the town of Diest. There are plenty of cool brands, including Diesel, Superdry and Filippa K, for you to try on, while the lunch bar’s menu features Italian-inspired dishes, best accompanied by a glass of prosecco or champagne. Whether you’re shopping or not, this is a great place to meet your girlfriends for lunch.

Flamant Dining

If you’re looking to buy furniture, this is a one-stop shop.

Take a look around and give your favourite pieces of furniture a test-run in the store’s restaurant, which is filled with the same items you can buy in the store. The menu features dishes such as sushi and caesar salad with truffles and lightly fried chicken.

Another combined bookshop and café, this time in Ghent, Walry has a great range of books on offer, from bestsellers to specialist books, and a lovely little café where you can browse your choices before you buy. It’s a bit like sitting in a friend’s house, looking through their book collection over a cup of tea. The difference being, of course, that you can buy the books you like.

Les boutiques-restaurants (ou salons de dégustation) sont entrées dans les moeurs, lorsque l’on achète des vêtements, du mobilier ou des livres.

À Gand, Coffee & Curiosia & Champagne (6 Geldmunt) vous permet de savourer une tasse de café ou une coupe de champagne avant de faire le plein de mobilier et d’accessoires vintage, et chez Walry (6 Zwijnaardsesteenweg) vous pouvez feuilleter les livres dans un agréable petit café.

Si vous désirez trouver l’atmosphère studieuse d’une bibliothèque dans une librairie, sans le silence, alors faites un saut chez Cook and Book (Avenue Paul Hymans 251) dans la capitale belge, où vous pourrez aussi vous rabattre sur de délicieux snacks et des lunches légers. Autre lieu : De Dry Coppen (11 Schrijnmakersstraat) à Louvain est une librairie-snack populaire. Si vous avez un petit creux, une belle sélection de pâtisseries s’offre à vous – veillez juste à ne pas tacher les livres ! À Diest, non loin de Bruxelles, SU’CH (10 Ketelstraat) est un magasin de vêtements trendy avec son propre bar lunch. On y sert des plats d’inspiration italienne. Un superbe endroit pour rencontrer vos amis.

Anvers offre de nombreuses opportunités de combiner shopping et cuisine. Flamant Dining (12 Lange Gasthuisstraat) est un magasin de mobilier multi-points, son restaurant est décoré avec les pièces que vous pouvez acheter dans la boutique. Si vous faites des achats avec des enfants, Oilily (26 Oudaan) comprend un café coloré où les enfants sont fortement encouragés à dessiner à la craie sur le bar. Verso (11 Lange Gasthuisstraat) est une institution de la scène de la mode à Anvers, on y découvre un restaurant, un bar et une terrasse Martini.

Et le super cool Hospital (4 De Burburestraat), où les fashionistas peuvent choisir sans fin sur les présentoirs de grands noms du design, va un pas plus loin. À côté de son petit apérobar italien, se trouve The Glorious, un luxueux bed and breakfast.

NL Shoppen tot je er bij neervalt (en dan een hapje eten)

Shoppen in België brengt tegenwoordig heel wat verrassingen met zich mee. Eten en drinken is een deel geworden van de winkelervaring, net als kledij, meubilair of boeken kopen.

In Gent krijg je bij Coffee & Curiosia & Champagne (Geldmunt 6) een kopje koffie of een glaasje champagne aangeboden terwijl je tussen meubels en vintage accessoires snuistert. Bij Walry (Zwijnaardesteenweg 6) kan je in een supergezellig cafeetje rondneuzen in de collectie boeken.

Zoek je de literaire sfeer van een bibliotheek in een boekenwinkel maar dan zonder die enge stilte, dan is Cook and Book (Avenue Paul Hymans 251) in de Belgische hoofdstad de plek die je zoekt. Als je buik begint te grommen, kan je jezelf er trakteren op een lekkere snacks of een lichte lunch. De Dry Coppen (Schrijnmakersstraat 11) in Leuven is een andere prima boekenwinkel met aandacht voor je culinaire verlangens. In Diest, niet ver van Brussel, ligt SU’CH (Ketelstraat 10), een trendy klerenwinkel met een eigen lunchbar waar Italiaanse gerechten worden geserveerd. Het is een prima plek om bij te praten met vrienden.

Antwerpen pakt uit met een heleboel etablissementen die shoppen en eten combineren. Alle stukken uit het meubilair van het restaurant van Flamant Dining (Lange Gasthuisstraat 12), een grote meubelzaak, zijn te koop. Als de kinderen mee gaan shoppen, is Oilily (Oudaan 26) een leuke plek. De kids worden actief aangespoord zich uit te leven met krijt op de bar van hun kleurrijk café. Verso (Lange Gasthuisstraat 11) is een vaste waarde in de Antwerpse modescene en biedt zijn klanten een restaurant, een martinibar en een terras. Het supercoole Hospital (De Burburestraat 4) is een paradijs voor fashionista’s. Je vindt er rij na rij van prachtige kledij van Italiaanse designers, maar de winkel gaat nog een stapje verder. Naast een bescheiden Italiaanse aperobar, The Glorious, kunnen klanten er ook terecht in een luxueuze bed & breakfast.
