29 London South West Four

With its house-centric music policy and dressed-up crowd, South West Four is slightly more glam than your average summer music festival. This year’s line-up on Clapham Common features Sasha & John Digweed, David Guetta and Layo & Bushwacka!, as well as Eric Prydz playing the after-party. www.southwestfour.com

Festival dos Oceanos

The Portuguese capital’s Ocean Festival kicks off with James Morrison on the 1 August and finishes with the city’s museums opening their doors on 6 and 13 August. In between, expect a percussion concert, rowing races, regattas and fireworks, too. www.festivaldosoceanos.com

Zomer Van Antwerpen

This inner-city event has set about redefining ‘quirky’. Entertainment on offer includes a choice of four circuses, a theatre and open-air film projections along the River Scheldt, plus a square merry-go-round populated by bison, fish heads and insects. www.zva.be

Sandsation

The only urban sand festival in Europe takes place for the sixth time at Berliner Hauptbahnhof. The huge sand pit draws an international crowd of sculptors and spectators, with carvings displayed alongside sand-top salsa lessons and live music. www.sandsation.com

Christopher Summer Festival

This festival has become a bit of an institution in Vilnius. Now in its 15th year, it sees the city’s churches, courtyards and theatres filled with the sound of music. Look out for Igor Dedusenko’s guitar recitals and fado chanteuse Joana Amendoeira. kristupofestivaliai.lt

Copenhagen Fashion Week

Denmark is famous for its cool, functional approach to design, and the country’s clothes are no different. Expect clean silhouettes, excellent quality and the devil to be in the detail when you join 50,000 others in the capital this month. www.copenhagenfashionweek.com

Way Out West

At just three years old, Way Out West is a newcomer to the festival scene, but has already been ranked among Europe’s top 20. Head to Slottsskogen to see Lily Allen, Arctic Monkeys, Ladyhawke and Basement Jaxx. www.wayoutwest.se

Vattenfall Cyclassics

This 250km cycling race is already regarded by many as a classic. There’s a bit of a carnival atmosphere about it all, probably owing to the fact that anyone can – and does – enter, from seasoned pros to families of amateurs. vattenfall-cyclassics.de

Semana Grande/Aste Nagusia

Music is the key to this vibrant celebration of Bilbao’s Basque heritage, so expect lots of free performances taking place in the city’s magnificent squares and churches. Look out for the daily strongman contest, too. astenagusia.com

Red Bull Air Race

Check out some spectacular flying stunts staged around giant low-level inflatable pylons on the banks of the Danube. Race day sees pilots reaching speeds of up to 400km/h. For the best views, head to the hills on the city’s outskirts. redbullairrace.com
