Model ambitions
Natalia Vodianova
steps off the catwalk

Russian supermodel Natalia Vodianova has created a capsule collection for New York knitwear label Lutz & Patmos.

The brown-haired beauty joins a high-profile list of previous guest designers, including Sofia Coppola, Kirsten Dunst and Jane Birkin. The 27-year-old promises an eclectic, sensual collection, including a long tube dress that converts into a short funnel-necked number. Book of style

Settle down with an impressive fashion tome

Maison Martin Margiela is celebrating its achievements as one of the most conceptual brands in the world with the launch of a stunning coffee table tome. Drawing from Martin Margiela’s personal archives, many of the photographs of catwalk shows, exhibitions, editorials and beyond have never been seen before, further opening the door to the secretive and iconoclast world of the famous atelier.

Featuring essays by Jean Paul Gaultier, Andrée Putman, French Vogue editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld and artist Vanessa Beecroft, the book is a work of art in itself, featuring silver inks, ribbon markers, a variety of lush paper types and an exquisitely embroidered white fabric cover. www.maisonmartinmargiela.com

Antwerp celebrates the ultimate in throwaway fashion – the paper dress

Antwerp’s ModeMuseum examines the use of paper in fashion this month with an exhibition celebrating the 1960s trend for paper dresses. The Scott Paper Company in the US introduced the first throwaway dress as a propaganda stunt in 1966, unwittingly sparking a trend for paper clothes that continued for several years. Almost 400 paper dresses are on display at MoMu, including designs by Hussein Chalayan, AF Vandevorst, John Galliano, Walter Van Beirendonck and Issey Miyake. After Belgium, the exhibition is expected to continue its journey around the world. www.momu.be

Designer on the rise

Keep a look out for the latest
creations by Tim Van Steenbergen

Winner of the Elle Best Belgian Designer of the Year 2009 award, Tim Van Steenbergen, is fast making a name for himself as the go-to man for smart, sophisticated clothing, most recently finding fans in the likes of pop star Rihanna, who was spotted house-hunting in New York in one of his basques.

If you’re looking to create a winter wardrobe, you could do worse than making Van Steenbergen your first port of call. The Belgium designer specialises in eye-catching outerwear – think luxuriously sculpted sheepskin coats with tails, knitwear duffle coats, voluminous three-quarter length capes, tweed belted military jackets and asymmetrical zip-up jackets with hoods – all in luxurious fabrics. A master of sculpture and form, he creates each garment by hand on a mannequin to develop its characteristic shape, with fashion-forward details such as collars that wrap like works of art around the neckline.www..timvansteenbergen.com
