The inn crowd

The local pub is woven into the fabric of English culture.

In January 2009, the British Beer & Pub Association estimated that pubs were closing 20 times faster than in 2006, with 13 country pubs closing each week. Key factors behind this include the credit crunch, spiralling costs, sinking beer sales and the added impact of the 2007 smoking ban.

But fear not. The survival of Britain’s ale houses depends on the provision of good food and/or comfortable bedrooms, and there’s a marked trend afoot for pubs with rooms. Alastair Sawday, author of the Special Places series, is the man with his finger on the pub pulse. In this extract from his trusty guide to the pubs and inns of England and Wales, he spotlights those with ingenuity and individuality. So settle back, enjoy your meal and bottoms up!

The Griffin Inn

A proper inn and one of the best – a community local that draws a well-heeled and devoted crowd. The occasional touch of scruffiness makes it almost perfect; fancy designers need not apply. The Pullan family runs it with huge passion. You get cosy open fires, 400-year-old beams, oak panelling, settles, red carpets, prints on the walls… it has aged well. There’s a lively bar, a small club room for racing on Saturdays and two cricket teams play in summer.

Bedrooms are tremendous value for money and full of uncluttered country inn elegance: expect uneven floors, lovely old furniture, soft coloured walls, free-standing Victorian baths, huge shower heads, crisp linen, fluffy bathrobes and handmade soaps. Rooms in the coach house are quieter; those in next-door Griffin House quieter still.

Smart menus based on the finest seasonal produce include fresh fish from Rye and Fletching lamb; both food and beers are as local as can be. There’s a wood oven on the terrace and, on summer Sundays, a spit-roast barbecue, accompanied by 10-mile views across Sheffield Park to the South Downs.

Birmingham

Peach Pubs’ flagship Rose & Crown opens with (rather good) bacon sarnies for breakfast and stays open all day. Enter a cheery, airy front bar with big leather sofas, low tables and a crackling winter fire. To the back is the big and bustling eating area, and a private room that can be booked for parties.

Most of the staff trained at Raymond Blanc’s Petit Blanc restaurants, and the food is good. The tapas-style portions of cheeses, hams, marinated anchovies, mixed olives and rustic breads slip down easily with a pint of Fuller’s London Pride or a glass of wine, while hot dishes are modern British with a Mediterranean slant. On the menu you may find baked sea trout, lemon and thyme couscous, and pork loin with rhubarb confit.

Lovely contemporary bedrooms have large shower rooms and overlook the square, filled on warm summer nights with a merry throng. It’s young, fun and conveniently central for Warwick. Rooms from €88/£75; main courses from €11,40/£9.75.

Bristol

The Brace of Pheasants

In a sleepy hamlet surrounded by downland, this thatched brick-and-flint building is Dorset’s prettiest pub (or a close contender). Originally two 16th-century cottages linked to the smithy, it became an inn in the 1930s and displays an unusual sign – a brace of pheasants in a glass case.

Beyond the latch door, the traditional low-beamed main bar has charm and character, with its inglenook big enough to plonk yourself down in, an impressive fireplace with a winter log fire, and an assortment of tables and chairs. Foaming pints of Ringwood and Otter are tapped from the cask to accompany plates of warming seasonal food – maybe home-cured duck salad with plum chutney, or venison steak with honey, thyme and red wine jus, followed by apple and rhubarb crumble.

Super-smart new rooms in the old skittle alley overlook the peaceful garden and sport painted feature beams, dramatic lamps, ornate drapes and splashes of colour (striking headboards, fancy bed throws and piles of cushions). Expect leather sofas, ceiling speakers, vast tiled bathrooms – and great walks from the door. Rooms from €111/£95; main courses from €10,50/£9.

This is a 15th-century farmhouse with later additions – it’s all but impossible to notice the join. Outside there are Indian benches with seagrass cushions; inside, big sofas in front of the fire. The gastropub interiors have neutral colours to soak up the light, sandblasted beams, halogen spotlights and Lloyd Loom wicker dining chairs.

Outside, steps lead down to three deeply comfy bedrooms in a stone building. All come in contemporary rustic style, with light wood furniture, flatscreen TVs, Egyptian cotton and deluge showers. There are White Company oils and bathrobes too. Climb back up the steps for seriously good food, perhaps risotto of Dorset crab, local beef, plenty of game in season and hot raspberry soufflé. Bath is a hike across the fields.

Manchester

Shibden Mill Inn

There’s still a pubby feel to this old inn, although it’s known for its restaurant. Shibden Bitter, Theakstons and three rotating bitters keep beer drinkers happy, the deep green valley setting within sound of the mill stream makes for idyllic summer drinking, and the wine list continues to win awards.

An unstuffy integrity lies behind this venture, from the front-of-house warmth to the modern British kitchen from which delicious dishes flow: roast pigeon and roasted parsnips, braised shank of Yorkshire lamb and sticky toffee pudding. There are cosy gate-leg tables and sofas in the bars, crisp white napery and candelabra in the restaurant, and most of the fruit and veg come from local Hill Top Farm; this is a special place to which people return.

All the bedrooms have been recently renovated and are carpeted, comfortable, individual and equipped with everything, from flatscreen TVs to WiFi. The suite is huge fun.

Alors que l’automne arrive à grands pas, répertoriez déjà quelques-uns des meilleurs pubs du territoire britannique

The Brace of Pheasants près de Bristol Ce bâtiment couvert de chaume est le pub le plus ravissant du Dorset (ou en tout cas un réel candidat à la première place). Le bar traditionnel avec son éclairage tamisé dégage charme et caractère, et les ‘pintes’ avec leur beau col de mousse sont servies au fût, en accompagnement de plats de saison.

The Wheatsheaf Combe Hay près de Bristol C’est une ancienne ferme du 15ème siècle avec de récentes extensions. Des escaliers à l’extérieur mènent à trois chambres d’un confort total, toutes dans un style contemporainrustique avec du mobilier en bois clair, TV à écran plat, du linge en coton égyptien et douche à multi-jets.

Shibden Mill Inn près de Manchester Un certain esprit d’authenticité et de quiétude se dégage de cet établissement, depuis la chaleur de la façade jusqu’à la cuisine moderne d’où se répandent des effluves de délicieux plats préparés maison. C’est un endroit très apprécié, où l’on revient.

The Pheasant Inn près de Newcastle Une superbe petite auberge, gérée avec un sens inné du respect des traditions. Les chambres sont simples et soignées, et vous recevrez un sérieux petit-déjeuner chaud le matin suivant, en regardant peut-être les chiens de bergers qui ramènent les troupeaux.

Rose & Crown près de Birmingham Le Peach Pub se démarque particulièrement pour ses sandwichs au bacon (plutôt bons) au petit-déjeuner. À l’étage, de somptueuses chambres contemporaines avec de larges salles de bain et de douche se remplissent de monde les chaudes soirées d’été.

The Hand & Flowers près de Londres Remarquablement décontracté. Le menu est sans tralala et il n’y a pas de tenue vestimentaire de rigueur dans le restaurant, juste une nourriture exquise qui vous transporte. Quatre suites de style se trouvent à 30 pas, le long de la route, dans deux cottages restaurés.

The Griffin Inn près de Londres Un lieu inscrit dans la communauté locale qui attire une clientèle nantie et fidèle. Les chambres offrent un excellent rapport qualité/prix et l’élégance parfaite d’une demeure campagnarde bien ordonnée. La cuisine et les bières sont tout ce qu’il y a de plus local.

Deze kroeg met een rieten dak is het mooiste café van Dorset (of alleszins een sterke kandidaat). De traditionele lage toog heeft charme en charisma te over. De schuimende pinten van het vat passen prima bij de warme seizoensgerechten die er worden geserveerd.

The Wheatsheaf Combe Hay nabij Bristol Welkom in een 15e-eeuwse hoeve! Later werden er nog een aantal bijgebouwen aan toegevoegd. Buiten leiden trappen naar drie uiterst comfortabele slaapkamers in rustieke, eigentijdse stijl met lichtgekleurd houten meubilair, flatscreen televisie, Egyptisch katoen en stortdouche.

Shibden Mill Inn nabij Manchester Achter de voorgevel van dit etablissement gaat een gezellig warme kroeg schuil met een moderne Britse keuken die heerlijke gerechten tevoorschijn tovert. Het is een speciale plek waar mensen met plezier naar terugkeren.

The Pheasant Inn nabij Newcastle Een piepkleine herberg die gerund wordt met een instinctief gevoel voor traditie. De slaapkamers zijn eenvoudig en net. ’s Ochtends staat er een lekker warm ontbijt voor je klaar. En met wat geluk stap je uit bed met uitzicht op de herdershonden die een kudde schapen samendrijven.

Rose & Crown nabij Birmingham Peach Pubs’ vlaggenschip begint de dag goed met (erg smakelijke) sandwiches met spek als ontbijt. De beeldige moderne slaapkamers op de bovenverdieping zijn allemaal uitgerust met een groot bad en douche, en kijken uit op het plein waar op warme zomeravonden een gezellige drukte heerst.

The Hand & Flowers nabij Londen ‘Opvallend zorgeloos’ is de beste omschrijving. Geen chique gerechten op het menu, geen kledingvoorschriften in het restaurant, gewoon heerlijke kost waar een mens van in vervoering raakt. Vier stijlvolle suites werden ondergebracht in twee opgeknapte huisjes zo’n 30 meter verderop in dezelfde straat.

Een volksherberg die een trouw, welgesteld publiek aantrekt. De slaapkamers hebben een uitstekende prijskwaliteitverhouding en baden in eenvoudige elegantie. De maaltijden op het menu zijn plaatselijke lekkernijen en de bieren op de kaart zijn stuk voor stuk lokaal gerstenat.
