Hamburg
Filmfest Hamburg

Up-and-coming directors are the main highlight at this festival, where more than 100 features will be shown. The screenings are divided into different categories, with European, Australian and Asian films making up the majority of entries, while the audience votes for the big winner. www.filmfest-hamburg.de

Bristol
Bristol Poetry Festival

Fans of verse won’t want to miss this celebration, during which poets perform everything from cabaret to traditional haiku. Public competitions will also be held, as well as a variety of workshops and performances around the city. www.poetrycan.co.uk

Cöpenicker Whiskyherbst

If whisky is your drink of choice, this is definitely the event for you. Whisky Autumn brings lovers of the strong stuff together at Freiheit 15 every year – expect plenty of tastings alongside live music. www.whisky-herbst.de

Bologna
Danza Urbana

Taking place across Bologna, Danza Urbana features choreography from France, Holland and Spain, as well as site-specific project Collettivo Cinetico by Francesca Pennini. The festival programme also features dance competitions and classes. www.danzaurbana.it

Oslo
Ultima ’09

Norway’s leading contemporary music and arts festival, organised by Oslo’s top institutions of art and music, is designed to spark interest in modern art. And it seems to be hitting its objectives: last year’s festival attracted more than 20,000 visitors. www.ultima.no

Leuven
Rogier van der Weyden, 1400-1464: Master of Passions

Of all the Flemish Primitives, only Rogier van der Weyden’s luminous work is ranked alongside Jan van Eyck’s. This exhibition, held to tie in with the launch of the redesigned Museum Vander Kelen-Mertens, attempts to explain why. www.rogiervanderweyden.be

Toulouse
Festival Occitania

See 300 artists celebrating more than 50 cultures at this extravagant festival. Music, dance and theatrical performances are just the beginning; it also features cinema, painting, photography and comedy. www.festivaloccitania.com

Bilbao
Bilbao Opera Season

This world-famous season, held at Palacio Euskalduna, features seven shows performed by the Bilbao Opera Choir and the Euskadiko Symphonic Orchestra. Try to bag a ticket to the opening performance – Norma by Vincenzo Bellini. www.abao.org

Vienna Recordia

Do you have what it takes to yodel with 1,200 people? Then head to Recordia, where 100,000 people gather to enter the Guinness Book of World Records. Events range from the traditional (strongest man) to the modern (mobile phone throwing). www.viennarecordia.com

Strings of Autumn
