The importance of the January transfer window isn’t limited to European football managers: with powder falling until April, now is the time to book a late-season ski break. Matt Barr has the lowdown on resorts that combine incredible snow and a short airport-to-resort hop to complete your dream trip

Geneva

Morzine/Avoriaz

The nearest ski area to Geneva airport also happens to be one of the biggest and best in the world. The incredible Portes du Soleil lift system spans the border between France and Switzerland, covering some 650km of runs. Experts will be challenged by the Chavanette area and famous ‘Wall’ run, snowboarders and freestyle skiers can enjoy the Croset funpark, and beginners have the Super Morzine area, with its crisscrossing gentle blue and green slopes.

Morzine is the undoubted capital of the area, home to fantastic restaurants, such as Auberge La Chalande, and infamous nightclubs Dixie’s and the Buddha Cafe. Perched high above is Avoriaz, a purpose-built town that looks like the jagged cliffs that surround it and is home to an annual sci-fi film festival. Some love its ultra-modern buildings while others frown at the concrete, but there’s no denying its validity as a ski-in, ski-out destination with the best sunsets in the Alps. www.morzine-avoriaz.com

Chamonix

There are classic ski resorts, and then there’s the daddy of them all. Actually six different skiable areas linked by a valley-wide lift pass, Chamonix’s terrain varies from the beginner-friendly and scenic Le Tour all the way to the expert-only (and guide-advisable) Aiguille du Midi – the cable car for which is Europe’s highest, and some would say scariest, lift. From the top of the Midi, the views over to Mont Blanc are as good as it gets, while the Vallee Blanche run back to the town rates as the world’s longest: a 22km meander through crevasse fields, glaciers, cliff-strewn corridors and gentle, tree-lined forest trails. Those taking it on often experience four seasons in the one descent.

Chamonix’s status as the top resort is confirmed by the incredible architecture in the town. Dating from its heyday in the 19th century, the imposing granite apartment blocks remind us that this was a favourite Parisian hangout. Add to this the Rousseau-like charm of the rustic chalets and the ancient Montenvers railway chugging up to the Mer du Glace glacier and ice grotto, and you have the world’s best resort with a fabulous Victorian twist – and only an hour’s drive from the airport. www.chamonix.com

Lyon

La Clusaz

Gaining a reputation as the freestyle skiing and snowboarding capital of France, La Clusaz has long tempted holidaymakers with its traditional French approach to visitors – fantastic local dishes and homely, budget-friendly accommodation. Add in the full-moon skiing nights (inspired by Thailand’s beach parties), when the resort opens the Crêt du Merle slopes from 9pm until 1am, and it’s no wonder that the resort attracts both young and old skiers.

La Clusaz’s terrain actually spans five mountains, with enough funparks to have produced Candide Thovex, one of the world’s most famous freestyle skiers. Check out the Telemix lift, too: it’s the world’s first chairlift and gondola hybrid, allowing users to choose how exposed to the elements they wish to be on the ride up. www.laclusaz.com

Turin

Sauze d’Oulx

Italy’s party resort has been attracting a young, up-for-it crowd since the 1980s. It’s popular with Brits due to its fantastic nightlife, largely intermediate-friendly terrain, easy-to-access slopes and great food stops – this is Italy, after all.

The most challenging slopes are accessed by the older drag lifts, which may be off-putting to some, but perfect for those who don’t mind doing some work for those powdery rewards. Elsewhere, this is a tree-lined resort where most of the red and blue runs wind their way down the often sun-soaked Southern Alps. www.sauzeonline.com

Milan

Pila

Small it may be, but Pila punches above its weight with a lift that tops out at 2,752m and some of the best mountain food in the world. Experts tend to go elsewhere due to the paucity of black runs and steep terrain, but this is a place for cruising, enjoying the scenery and taking in breakfast, brunch, elevenses, lunch and an afternoon snack – allowing plenty of time for coffee breaks.

The slopes of the Aosta Valley are famously suitable for improvers and Pila is king of the middle ground, with 20 of its 26 runs aimed at those who love reds. The terrain reflects the run colours, with wide, open spaces ideal for practising carves and fun turns. Beginners may be pleased to know that the famous low Italian prices stretch to the ski school, too, where tuition fees can be half that of their French counterparts. www.pila.it

Genève Morzine/Avoriaz Het dichtstbijzijnde skigebied bij de luchthaven van Genève is toevallig ook één van de grootste en beste ter wereld. Met zo’n 650km pistes en 80 zetelliften is het liftsysteem Portes du Soleil de thuis van enkele spectaculaire pistes, geheime plekjes en goed onderhouden pipes in Europa.

Genève Chamonix In Chamonix worden zes verschillende skigebieden verbonden door een skipas voor de hele vallei. Het terrein varieert van het beginnersvriendelijke en panoramische Le Tour tot de Aiguille du Midi (enkel voor experts, gids aangeraden).

Voeg hier de prachtige skinachten bij volle maan aan toe en het is niet verwonderlijk dat het resort zowel jonge als minder jonge skiërs aantrekt.

Turijn Sauze d’Oulx Het feestresort van Italië trekt sinds de jaren ’80 een jong en enthousiast publiek aan. De meest uitdagende hellingen hebben oudere sleepliften, maar verder is dit een resort omgeven door bomen waar de meeste pistes naar beneden kronkelen tussen de vaak zonovergoten zuidelijke Alpen.

Milaan Pila Het is dan misschien klein, maar Pila stijgt boven zichzelf uit met een lift die tot 2.752m gaat en het beste eten in de bergen ter wereld. Dit is de plaats om rustig te glijden, van het landschap te genieten en veel koffiepauzes nemen.
