As the weather warms up, Chris Peck shakes his groove thing at three of Spain’s loco live music hot spots
Madrid
Stylish and slick, Sol y Sombra (18 Calle de Echegaray, www.solysombra.name) has an air of sophistication that makes it feel more like a nightclub for the rich and famous than a great place for live music. You need to be reasonably well-dressed to get past the bouncer, but the crowd is as curvaceous as the contemporary décor, while the sounds are as fresh as the mint leaves in your mojito: the varied programme encompasses live jazz, soul, R’n’B and even flamenco.
It also stays open until 5am, so you can dance the night away to some of the city’s sexiest tunes. Remember that evenings out start late in Spain.
Bilbao
Opened in 1995, Kafe Antzokia (2 Done Bikendi Kalea, www.kafeantzokia.com) is Bilbao’s most important live music venue. Housed in a former theatre, the stage plays host to a range of musical genres, from traditional Basque to international pop/rock bands, world music and reggae – and even the occasional play. Make moves on the dance floor or your partner and get the blood flowing.
Malaga
For some traditional Spanish beats, head to Stars Live Music Café (11 Paseo Maritimo de Levante, www.starslivemusic.com). From live flamenco on Thursdays through to modern Euro pop, this seafront venue boasts a large outdoor terrace (to make the most of the evening sunshine) and a top-notch selection of cocktails. While you might be hard-pushed to spot any real ‘stars’ of stage or screen, you can sing and dance along to the latest hits and make a star of yourself.
