Bright young things

Photography Joseph Hunwick

From fabulous silks to patchwork prints, make a style statement this summer with the latest collections from Barcelona’s emerging design talent

Zazo & Brull

"Barcelona is a good city for contemporary fashion with no shortage of local talent. Although a lot remains to be done, the city is well on its way to becoming an international fashion hub"

Xavier Zazo and Clara Brull sit high in the ranks of Barcelona’s avant-garde designers. Their summer collection is inspired by Japanese Samurai: by reinterpreting the warriors’ armour in jackets and skirts, with structured details on hips and shoulders and including both gorgeous silks and reinforced materials, it achieves something that’s halfway between soft and hard. They show collections in Barcelona, but sell internationally. Zazo & Brull, 315 Carrer de Mallorca; Érase Una Vez, 7 Carrer de Goya www.zazobrull.com

Josep Font

"Barcelona is my favourite city. I wouldn’t live anywhere else"

Spain’s most internationally recognised designer, Josep Font is Catalan by birth and still lives and works in Barcelona. This is despite the fact that since 2008, he’s been producing haute couture collections for Paris – the first Spanish fashion creative to do so since Balenciaga. He shares Balenciaga’s shyness and reticence to stand in the limelight. His Barcelona boutique, situated just in front of Gaudí’s Pedrera, is well worth a visit.

Manuel Bolaño

"Barcelona is a very independent fashion centre thanks to its cultural diversity"

Manuel Bolaño is one of the very youngest Barcelona designers. After studying in Barcelona he worked as a designer for MANGO and has won several awards, including the 2007 Bread & Butter Young Talent Award. His Summer 2010 collection, ‘Canela en Rama’, is inspired by fin de siècle aesthetics and, more specifically, by the Spanish demimondaine known in Paris at the time by the name ‘La Belle Otero’.

Serguei Povaguin

"Barcelona is a city with a strong design culture. It’s constantly moving and has a fine textile tradition. Some of the best Spanish designers are from this city"

Born in Russia, Serguei Povaguin came to Spain as a teenager and managed to remain and study in Barcelona, where he started showing his fashion collections and now has his own atelier. He’s the winner of two consecutive L’Oréal Awards for Best Collection, in September 2008 and February 2009.

Cardona Bonache

"Barcelona is still not quite at the level of other main European capitals in its fashion status, but it’s getting there"

Victor Cardona and Israel Frutos Bonache met at the prestigious Antwerp Design School and later worked together in textile research labs. They won the Best Collection award at the latest Barcelona 080 Fashion Week, with a minimalist and sober show that explored the possibilities of the box and inverted pleats. Guillen Doz

"Barcelona is a mix of cultures and styles, and is in constant flux. It’s the most cosmopolitan and European of all Spanish cities"

Guillen Doz is the label of brother-and-sister duo Miriam and Arturo, which they launched in 2008 after winning several awards and working for various fashion companies. Clothes are elegant and sophisticated, with great attention to materials, cut and volume. Their third collection, Summer Storm, is inspired by the colours of the sky during the summer months, and the label is now taking its rightful place alongside international names in big stores.
