Comedy Festival
MANCHESTER

Laughter is guaranteed at the Manchester Comedy Festival, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The event showcases the city’s homegrown talent alongside an assortment of international acts, both up-and-coming and established – including Jimmy Carr. www.manchestercomedyfestival.co.uk

Designblok
PRAGUE

Taking place in showrooms, boutiques and galleries scattered across the Golden City, this annual week-long exhibition features the most exciting new work from the world of design. This year’s theme is water, with all the pieces featuring an aquatic element. www.designblok.cz

Wim Delvoye: Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door
BRUSSELS

Modern Belgian artist Wim Delvoye’s first solo show at BOZAR plays with the tenets of gothic design and features metal cathedrals, and crooked Christs. His stained glass windows depict unexpected scenes that are unlikely to be found in any church. www.bozar.be

ATP If Stockholm Open
STOCKHOLM

Ghent Film Festival
GHENT

From student festival origins in the 1970s, the Ghent Film Festival has become a uniquely eclectic event. Focusing on movie music, it stages concerts; 2010 will see actor Tim Robbins play with his Rogues Gallery Band. There’s also an exhibition in honour of legendary French filmmaker Jacques Tati (Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot pictured above). www.filmfestival.be

Cirque du Soleil Saltimbanco
MADRID

The world’s most famous circus company brings its signature show to the Spanish capital this month. Deriving its name from an Italian phrase meaning ‘to jump on a bench’, Saltimbanco promises to be as bright and brilliant as it is bizarre. www.cirquedusoleil.com

Festival of Lights
BERLIN

Spectacular illuminations bring 50 historic and important buildings across the city to life in this two-week extravaganza. A programme of events – including Jazz at the Ministergardens and a 5km fun run – accompanies the dazzling light displays. www.festival-of-lights.de

Night of Culture
COPENHAGEN

International SPIRIT Film Festival
