Despite cooler temperatures, Prague is truly dazzling in the autumn. With the leaves changing colors on Petrin Hill and the streets of old town a little quieter, the city is the perfect place in which to relax and soak up the brilliant afterglow of summer. Julie O’Shea talks us through the highlights
Ruzyne International Airport
Bus: The number 119 bus runs between the airport and the Dejvicka metro station (which is on the A line) every 7 to 20 minutes. Tickets cost €1/CZK 28 and are valid for 60 minutes on weekdays and 90 minutes on weekends. They can be used on all buses, trams and metros.
Taxi: A taxi ride to the city centre from the airport will take about 30 minutes and cost approximately €25/ CZK 704, but always negotiate the price before you set off.

Prague’s lovely, well-preserved old town is always a good starting point during any visit to the Czech capital.
Sleep soundly – The newly opened Metropol (33 Narodni, tel. , metropolhotel.cz, rooms from €240/CZK 6,700) is a nice mix of modern and retro.
Culture vultures – Catch a performance of Don Giovanni at the famed Estates Theatre (1 Ovocny trh), where Mozart premiered the opera in 1787. Before the show grab a drink at the historic Municipal House (5 Nam Republiky).
Must eat – Fusion lovers must try the tantalizing fare over at Orange Moon (5 Ramova, tel. ).
Must drink – Settle in for an evening of fun at Konvikt Pub (11 Bartolomesjska), where tourists and locals mingle.
Dance the night away – Roxy (33 Dlouha) is one of Prague’s best loved nightclubs.
Shop til you drop – pend hours picking through the glittery second-hand treasures at Bric a Brac (7 Tynska).
The city’s new town is packed with restaurants, bars and shops.
Sleep soundly – Treat yourself to a massage before bedding down for the night at Boscolo Hotel Carlo IV (13 Senovazne nam, tel. , boscohotels.com, rooms from €300/CZK 8,400). If you are on a budget, head over to the Falkensteiner Maria Prag (21 Opletalova, tel. , rooms from €110/CZK 3,000).
Must eat – Jama (7 V Jame, tel. ) serves up the most succulent hamburgers, and friendly staff make diners feel right at home.
Must drink – For a taste of some of the city’s cheapest beer on tap, follow the locals to Hloupy Honza (12 Skolska). Up the street is Pivovarsky dum (15 Lipova) where you can order a cherry or banana lager.
Dance the night away – The pulsating Duplex Dance Club (21 Vaclavske nam) is the place to see and be seen.
Shop til you drop – Neoluxor-Palac knih Luxor (41 Vaclavske nam) boasts four floors of magazines, books and travel guides
Culture vultures – The beautiful atrium in Prague’s historic main post office (14 Jindrisska) is well worth a visit.
Just one short metro ride away from the city centre, this modish area is home to some of the best pubs in Prague.
Sleep soundly – Right on the outskirts of this trendy neighborhood is the affordably chic Czech Inn (76 Francouzska, tel. , czech-inn.com, rooms from €39/CZK 1,100), which hosts a trivia night every Monday.
Must eat – Chez Marcel sur la butte (20 Americka, tel. ) does excellent chicken and fries, and its laid back atmosphere makes it perfect for a low-key evening.
Must drink – The neighbourhood is overflowing with quaint little hideaways. Try something fruity at the Peach Pit (22 Budecska) or take to the stage at Noel’s (18 Anny Letenske) open mic night.
Shop til you drop – Sift through the Czech porcelain at Dum porcelanu (16 Jugoslavska) to find a unique souvenir.
A quaint residential district that lies down the hill from Prague Castle’s magnificent gardens.
Sleep soundly – Hole up down the road from Sparta Stadium and Letna’s awe-inspiring park at Hotel Lenta Prague (8 Na Vysinach, tel. , prague-hotel-letna.com, rooms from €75/CZK 2,100).
Must eat – Don’t leave the city without trying the BLT and tomato soup combo at Fraktal (1 Smeralova, tel. ).
Must drink – Chill out with the Letna locals at Andalusian Dog (4 Korunovacni), which plays good music and charges reasonable prices.
Dance the night away – Cross Club (23 Plynarni) has an eclectic music policy and fantastic décor.
