Sweden : Stockholm - October 2007

Country Code: Dial for Sweden

Experience autumn in Stockholm. Feel the crisp breeze coming in from the water that surrounds this Nordic capital and soak up the last of the sunlight. Stockholm has great restaurants and outstanding shopping and, being a relatively small city, everything is within easy reach. Victoria Larsson points you in the right direction

Getting around

Airport is 8km west of the city.

Bus: Flygbussarna buses link the airport with Stockholm’s bus/train station, Cityterminalen. The journey costs €14/ SEK 130 return and takes 20 minutes, with departures every 20 minutes at peak times.
Taxi: Licensed cabs are available outside the terminal. The fare to the city centre is about €20/SEK 186.
Tourist information: The main office is at 27 Hamngatan, with the entrance on Kungsträdgården (tel. , stockholmtown.com).

SoFo

South of Folkungagatan is the most up-market part of Södermalm. Once Stockholm’s ghetto, it’s now a fashionable enclave of artists and young professionals.

Sleep soundly – When Hotel Tre Små Rum (81 Högbergsgatan, tel. , tresmarum.se, rooms from €75/SEK 695) opened in 1993, there were only three rooms. Now this cute budget hotel has seven. Bathrooms are in the hallway, but the location is unbeatable, and guests are offered bicycle rental.

Must eat – Head to En Ful och En Gul (22 Erstagatan, tel. ) for authentic Chinese food in a sleek setting. At Matkultur (21 Erstagatan, tel. ) you can feast on African, Asian and South American dishes.

Must drink – Söders Hjärta (22 Bellmansgatan) is a charming remnant of the area’s bohemian history.

Dance the night away – Enjoy spectacular views of Stockholm at Mosebacke (3 Mosebacke Torg).

Shop til you drop – Sneakers’n’Stuff (124 Åsögatan) is the best place in town for street wear. Tjallamalla (46 Bondegatan) carries more than 200 clothing and jewellery labels, some well established and others unknown.

Långholmen

A tiny green island in between Söder and Kungsholmen.

Sleep soundly – Långholmen Hotell (20 Långholmsmuren, tel. , langholmen.com, rooms from €100/SEK 935) was once a prison that housed some of Stockholm’s most notorious criminals. Rooms are quite basic but it’s set in beautiful grounds.

Must eat – Lasse i Parken (56 Högalidsgatan, tel. ) serves classy Swedish cuisine.

Kungsholmen

This used to be the sleepiest island of Stockholm, but that’s changing. Enjoy a scenic walk along Norr Mälarstrand, or great shopping and dining in this unpretentious part of town.

Sleep soundly – Hotel Haga Kristineberg (10 Hjalmar Söderbergs väg, tel. , hotelhagakristineberg. se, rooms from €68/ SEK 625) offers affordable, unassuming rooms in a quiet, residential part of Kungsholmen.

Must drink – Stylish Lokal (8 Scheelegatan) attracts both locals and out-of towners.

Dance the night away – Trädgården (2-4 Flemminggatan) is a haven for Stockholm’s club kids, with multiple dance floors and top DJs.

Shop til you drop – Katitzi (44 Hantverkargatan) sells a cool mix of vintage clothing and new Swedish labels. Cute and quirky, you’ll always find a bargain. Room (20 Alströmergatan) is a trendy homeware store.

Söder om Söder

This up-and-coming part of town is attracting Stockholm’s younger residents.

Sleep soundly – Hotel Attaché (16 Cedergrensvägen, 1185, hotelattache.se, rooms from €70/SEK 645) is a quiet, affordable hotel based near hipster hang-out Landet and art academy Konstfack.

Culture vultures – Färgfabriken (1 Lövholmsbrinken) is a cutting edge, internationally acclaimed contemporary arts centre housed in an old paint factory.

Must eat – Landet (27 LM Erickssons väg, ) is an ambitious restaurant mixing traditional Swedish food with French cuisine. The upstairs club plays live music – a good place to start or end your night. Vintervikens Trädgårdskcafé (40 Vinterviksvägen, tel. ) serves organic fare in a gorgeous garden.
