Sweden : Gothenburg - December 2007

Country Code: Dial for Sweden

Sweden’s second city is grittier but friendlier than the capital, Stockholm. The locals are fun-loving, friendly, outgoing and – when it comes to their city on the ‘right’ coast – deeply partisan. And with good reason, too. As Victoria Larsson discovers, Gothenburg is great fun no matter what time of year you travel there

Getting around

Landvetter

Bus: Flygbussarna airport coaches stop at Nils Ericson Terminalen (the main bus station), Kungsportsplatsen (for the old town), Park Avenue (on Avenyn) and Korsvägen. A return ticket costs €15/SEK 140 and takes 30 minutes, with departures every 20 minutes during peak times.
Taxi: Taxis offer a fixed price for the 30-minute journey into town (about €36/SEK 338).
Tourist information: The main tourist office is located at 2 Kungsportsplatsen (2500, goteborg.com).

LINNÉSTADEN

Once a run-down, working class part of town, Linnéstaden is now a shopping destination for local fashion mavens, as well as visitors. Järntorget is also a bar-crawl hub, where old-time dives can be found alongside young, trendy hot spots.

Sleep soundly – Get a little slice of England at the intimate Hotel Lilton (9 Föreningsgatan, 8808, lilton.se, rooms from €75/SEK 695).

Culture vultures – Pustervik (12 Järntorgsgatan) is the go-to place for artistic expression – from live music and cutting edge performance art to theatre and poetry. Unsurprisingly, it attracts an eclectic crowd.

Must eat – Delicious, fresh west-coast seafood is the focus at rustic Sjöbaren (25 Haga Nygata, tel. ). Bönor och Bagels (48 Linnégatan, 3555) is a perennially popular café where you get to pick the strength of your latte and choose between countless different bagels.

Must drink – Bitter (59 Linnégatan) is a trendy bar that makes great cocktails, which often feature bitters. On Fridays they serve a free after-work buffet and beer at happy-hour prices. As you’d expect, it gets extremely crowded.

Dance the night away – Respekt (7 Järntorget) is a very cosmopolitan club, hosting various club nights spread across several levels.

Shop til you drop – Twist & Tango (31 Haga Nygata) sells feminine clothes with nice details in a spacious, pretty store. For retro furniture and lamps, check out Bebop (4 Kaponjärgatan).

CENTRUM

The most central part of Gothenburg is home to Avenyn, the city’s fabled boulevard, which is lined with bars and restaurants. Other hip destinations have sprung up around Magasinsgatan and Vallgatan.

Sleep soundly – Hotel Flora (2 Grönsakstorget, 8616, hotelflora.se, rooms from €70/SEK 650) has been through some major renovations and is now colourful and stylish. The location is unbeatable, too.

Culture vultures – Röhsska Museet (37-39 Vasagatan) is a must for design lovers. It features a great permanent collection of historic treasures as well as temporary displays.

Must eat – Enjoy the work of established local artists at Hos Pelle (2 Djupedalsgatan, 1031) while enjoying the hearty meals prepared with seasonal ingredients. Magnus & Magnus (8 Magasinsgatan, 3000) is one of Gothenburg’s most acclaimed restaurants. The wine list is extensive, and the food beautiful and creative.

Must drink – Tranquilo (14 Kungstorget) transposes the essence of Miami to Gothenburg. At weekends it morphs into a packed club playing all kinds of Latin music.

Shop til you drop – Monki Girl (11 Södra Larmgatan) sells edgy young fashion at bargain prices. Emma & Malena (19 Magasinsgatan) is a local label specialising in nautical themes and knitted hats.

MAJORNA

A bohemian part of west Gothenburg is perfect for a leisurely stroll. Some parts date back to the early 17th century, but most of the houses were built in the late 19th century.

Sleep soundly – Spar Hotel Majorna (66-70 Karl Johansgatan, tel. , sparhotel.se, rooms from €64/ SEK 595) is friendly and affordable.

Culture vultures – Musikens Hus (13 Djurgårdsgatan) hosts many cultural events. There are always interesting exhibitions at Röda Sten (1 Röda Sten).

Must eat – Rawfish Sushi (2 Mariaplan, 2240) serves creative rolls and lots of vegetarian options. Café Hängmattan (16 Karl Johansgatan, 1583) has a tasty vegetarian buffet on weekdays.
