Getting around

Saint Exupéry Airport

Bus: There is the Satobus every 20 minutes to and from the airport. Buses run from 5.35am to 11.40pm, seven days a week. A single ticket to the city costs €8.60 and the journey takes about 50 minutes.
Taxi: A taxi to the city centre costs approximately €50 during the day and €65 at night, taking around 45 minutes.
Tourist information: The main tourist office is located at Place Bellecour (tel. , en. www.lyon-france.com).

1ST AND 2ND DISTRICTS

All boutiques and bustling squares, the peninsula brims with joie de vivre.

Sleep soundly – The Sofitel Bellecour (20 Quai Gailleton, tel. , www.sofitel.com, rooms from €164) has a panoramic restaurant. Or try the heavenly Hôtel des Célestins (4 Rue des Archers, tel. , www.hotelcelestins.com, rooms from €62).

Culture vultures – Immerse yourself in some of the city’s best sculpture and paintings at the Musée des Beaux Arts (20 Place des Terreaux).

Must eat – Le Passage (8 Rue du Plâtre, tel. ) serves lovely Lyonnais dishes. L’Amboise (12 Rue d’Amboise, tel ) is good for a laid-back evening and does great fondant au chocolat (warm chocolate cake).

Must drink – Sip scrummy cocktails at Bagat’elles (15 Rue des Capucins). At weekends head to La Fée Verte (4 Rue Pizay) for electro and absinth.

Dance the night away – L’Etincelle’s (16 Rue Casimir Périer) music policy encompasses everything from 70s disco to current hits.

Shop til you drop – Be wowed by first-rate meats and cheeses at Halle de la Martinière (Place Gabriel Rimbaud).

3RD DISTRICT

This district is conveniently close to railway station and airport shuttle links.

Sleep soundly – The Grand Hôtel Mercure Saxe-Lafayette (29 Rue de Bonnel, tel. , www.mercure.com, rooms from €84) excels at regional cuisine. Ibis Lyon Part Dieu Les Halles (78 Rue de Bonnel, tel. , www.accorhotels.com, rooms from €39) scores top marks for quality and price.

Culture vultures – The Auditorium de Lyon (149 Rue Garibaldi) hosts regular (mainly classical) concerts

Must eat – The 32nd-floor view from Restaurant panoramique L’Arc en Ciel (129 Rue Servient, tel. ) is unforgettable, as is the gourmet menu. Toya (180 Rue de Créqui, tel. ) serves fresh Japanese cuisine.

Must drink – De l’autre Côté du Pont (25 Cours Gambetta) specialises in organic and fair trade refreshments.

Shop til you drop – Galeries Lafayette (209 Boulevard Piriel) has three floors full of designer labels.

5TH DISTRICT

Lyon’s old town is picturesque and well preserved, while its mediaeval buildings and narrow passageways hold many secrets.

Sleep soundly – You’ll find Florentine architecture and lovely views at Phénix Hôtel (7 Quai de Bondy, tel. , www.hotel-le-phenix.fr, rooms from €125). Bed and Breakfast (10 Rue Saint Fiacre, tel. , www.bb-lyon.com, rooms from €39) is cheap and cheerful.

Culture vultures – See Pinocchio become a real boy at Le Musée des Automates (100 Rue Saint Georges).

Must eat – Try inventive dishes à la carte at Christian Têtedoie (54 Quai Pierre Scize, tel. ). Happy Friends Family (29 Rue du Boeuf, tel. ) is renowned for good food and friendly service.

Must drink – Sample excellent wines at La Maison (2 Place Ennemond Fousseret).

Dance the night away – Try Le Papagayo (87 Quai Pierre Scize) for dinner followed by dancing.

6TH DISTRICT

This district’s handy for the Parc de la Tête d’Or, France’s largest urban park.

Sleep soundly – For comfort and elegance, there’s no better place to lay your head than Le Roosevelt (48 Rue de Sèze, tel. , hotel-roosevelt.com, rooms from €95).

Culture vultures – Take in the latest modern art exhibitions at the Musée d’Art Contemporain (81 Quai Charles de Gaulle).

Must eat – Spoil yourself with classic French cuisine at Les Compagnons (17 Rue de Sully, tel. ). Or go for simplicity at Le Café des Anges (81 Rue Vauban, tel. ).

Must drink – Ti Saint-Barth (71 Cours Vitton) is trendy and fun.

Shop til you drop – Give your home a touch of French chic at L’Armoire à Linge (95 Rue Duguesclin).
