Manchester Airport is 15km from the city centre.
Train: During the day there are seven direct trains an hour to Manchester Piccadilly, which take 20 minutes. The service operates less frequently at night. Many trains also stop at Deansgate and Oxford Road. Tickets cost about €4/£3.
Taxi: A taxi from to the city centre costs about €25/£20. The journey generally takes between 20 and 30 minutes.

The centre of Manchester has undergone a spectacular transformation over the past decade. If you base yourself here, you’ll be ideally placed to explore the whole city.
Sleep soundly – Splash out and stay at Malmaison (1-3 Piccadilly, tel. , www.malmaison-manchester.com, rooms from £149/€202) – and make time to chill out at the gorgeous Petit Spa. For great views of the city, try the imposing Hilton (303 Deansgate, tel. , www.hilton.co.uk, rooms from €224/£165).
Culture vultures – Why not take in a gig at the MEN Arena (Victoria Station, Hunts Bank)? The February line-up features performances by Alicia Keys and the Smashing Pumpkins as well as the X Factor Live tour.
Must eat – There’s modern European cuisine and some first-rate wines on the menu at Panacea (14 John Dalton Street, tel. ).
Shop til you drop – Busy King Street is the place to go for upmarket designer boutiques. The nearby House of Fraser (96-118 Deansgate) has got pretty much everything under one roof.

It’s also handy for the airport and the idyllic Cheshire countryside.

Must eat – Tuck into a hearty Sunday roast at the Didsbury Inn (852 Wilmslow Road, tel. ). This popular gastro pub also serves some excellent guest beers. The Lime Tree (8 Lapwing Lane, tel. ) is one of the most highly regarded restaurants in Manchester. It’s also a good place for a relaxing drink.
Explore the Northern Quarter for a slice of alternative Manchester. You’ll find some interesting independent shops and the city’s best bars.
Culture vultures – You’re guaranteed a chuckle at the Frog & Bucket Comedy Club (102 Oldham Street), Manchester’s top stand-up venue.
Must drink – Pop into Common (39-41 Edge Street) for a wide range of beers and some original artwork from local boy Matt Sewell.
Shop til you drop – If you’re in town on a Saturday, take a wander around the urban street Fashion Market (corner of Tib Street and Market Street). The emphasis is on one-off pieces by upand-coming local designers.
Canal Street and its environs are the epicentre of Manchester’s gay scene. This leafy corner of the city bursts into life in the evenings, and the bars, clubs and restaurants are popular with the local gay community and straight visitors.
Sleep soundly – There’s tasty home-cooked food on offer at Eden (3 Brazil Street, tel. ). The staff are friendly and the prices reasonable. The award-winning Taurus (1 Canal Street, tel. ) serves up a huge range of British and international dishes in generous portions.
Must drink – Check out AXM (10 Canal Street) for some fabulous cocktails in a stylish setting. Meanwhile Queer (4 Canal Street) is a chilled-out café in the daytime and a bustling club by night.
Dance the night away – Essential (8 Minshull Street) has been a Canal Street institution for years now. Expect a full-on, no-holds-barred party with big tunes and a lively atmosphere.
