Tourist information: The main tourist office is at 4 Ulitsa Ilyinka (tel. , www.moscow-city.ru).
The main artery of the city leading away from Red Square, Tverskaya Ulitsa never sleeps.
Sleep soundly – The city’s newest high-end hotel, the Ritz-Carlton (3 Tverskaya Ulitsa, tel. , www.ritzcarlton.com, rooms from €725/RUB 26,081), has made quite a name for itself. Those who don’t have money to burn will appreciate the Sheraton Palace (19 1st Tverskaya-Yamskaya Ulitsa, tel. , www.sheratonpalace.ru, rooms from €200/RUB 7,194). It’s no palace, but it is half the price.
Must eat – The city’s most beloved restaurant is the ornate Café Pushkin (26a Tverskoi Bulvar, tel. ). For a dose of Moscow’s gaudy café culture, drop into Etazh (14 Tverskaya Ulitsa, tel. ).
Must drink – Help (27 1st TverskayaYamskaya Ulitsa) is on hand to rescue you from sobriety 24 hours a day.
Dance the night away – Justo Banya Douche (3 Teatralniy Proyezd), located in the former Central Baths, is an exclusive nightclub with a unique sauna theme.
This district has a high density of restaurants, cafés and nightclubs.
Must drink – Russian bohemians gather around tables at Proekt OGI (8/12 Potapovsky Pereulok) to sink cheap shots of vodka and hear experimental music. Futuristic Version 1.5 (3 Varvarka Ulitsa) is a slightly more upscale venue.
Dance the night away – On weekends Solyanka (11/6 Solyanka Ulitsa) has a crowd of bizarrely dressed young people outside, hoping to be granted entrance.
Shop til you drop – Once the central Soviet department store, GUM on Red Square is now a consumer’s dream come true with all the leading European labels and Russia’s own Bosco di Ciliegi.
Quiet, quaint Zamoskvorechye (literally ‘across the Moskva River’) looks more European than Soviet and is a desirable residential neighborhood.
Sleep soundly – Baltschug Kempinski (1 Baltschug Ulitsa, tel. , kempinski.com, rooms from €400/RUB 14,392) is renowned for its stunning view of the Kremlin and eponymous house restaurant.
Culture vultures – Much of Russia’s great pre-revolutionary art is housed in the Tretyakov Gallery (12 Lavrushinskiy Pereulok).
Must eat – Sample the rustic Russian cuisine at Grabli (27 Pyatnitskaya Ulitsa), a two-story buffet. Or walk along the river to Italian restaurant Dorian Gray (6/1 Kadashevskaya Ulitsa). Across from the Kremlin, it’s notorious as a haunt for shady businessmen and politicians.
Dance the night away – There are three noteworthy nightclubs on the Moskva River embankment: fashionable Fabrique (2 Kosmodamianskaja Naberezhnaya), egalitarian Cabana (4 Raushskaya Naberezhnaya) and gentlemen’s club Violete (4/5 Raushskaya Naberezhnaya).
Once home to Leo Tolstoy, Park Kultury is becoming gentrified by affluent Muscovites seeking refuge from the city.
Culture vultures – Busts of Soviet heroes lie around the slightly creepy Fallen Monument Park (10 Krymski Val). Across the street is Park Kultury, which has a carnival and ice skating in winter.
Must eat – Residents of Park Kultury are lucky to have two top-notch Georgian restaurants to choose from: Guria (7/3 Komsomolsky Prospekt, tel. ) and Mama Zoya (16d Frunzenskaya Naberezhnaya, tel. ). The former is a homey, hole-in-the-wall joint, while the latter is housed in a lavish boat on the Moskva River.
Must drink – Residents flock to Hemingways (13 Komsomolsky Prospekt) a margarita bar. Vodka Bar (18b Lva Tolstogo Ulitsa) is a watering hole of the more domestic variety.
Shop til you drop – You can still buy silk from the store adjoining the Krasnaya Roza factory (11 Timura Frunze Ulitsa).
