Airport is 8km west of the city.
Bus: Flygbussarna buses link the airport with Stockholm’s bus/train station, Cityterminalen. The journey costs €14/ SEK 130 return and takes 20 minutes, with departures every 20 minutes at peak times.
Taxi: Licensed cabs are available outside the terminal. The fare to the city centre is about €20/SEK 186.
Tourist information: The main office is at 27 Hamngatan, with the entrance on Kungsträdgården (tel. , stockholmtown.com).
Once quiet and mostly residential, this part of town is now teeming with great shopping and good restaurants.
Sleep soundly – First Hotel Amaranten (31 Kungsholmsgatan, tel. , www.firsthotels.se, rooms from €85/SEK 800) has an unbeatable location, gorgeous rooms and an in-house spa and gym.
Must eat – Indulge in Stockholm’s best sushi at Roppongi (76 Hantverkargatan, tel. ), or get a tasty grilled sandwich and a healthy salad at Vurma (15 Polhemsgatan, tel. ).
Must drink – Experience a little slice of Tuscany in Stockholm at Terrenos Vinotek (12 Scheelegatan).
Shop til you drop – Head over Västermalmsgallerian (4-5 Eriksgatan) for all your shopping needs. Under one roof you’ll find Swedish design at Björn Borg, H&M and Designtorget, and Solo has a mix of trendy local and international brands.
Gamla Stan means ‘old town’ in Swedish. Walk down narrow, winding streets, gawk at the changing of the guard outside the Royal Palace and shop for souvenirs or unique gifts.
Sleep soundly – Part of the small, family-owned Victory Hotel (5 Lilla Nygatan, , www.victoryhotel.se, rooms from €141/SEK 1325) dates back to 1382.
Must eat – Pontus by the Sea (2 Tullhus, Skeppsbrokajen, 2095) is a trendy restaurant and bar serving Swedish cuisine with a twist. Grill Ruby (14 Österlånggatan, 6015) offers American-style food in a medieval building.
Must drink – Expect acoustic live music at the labyrinthine Wirströms Pub (13 Stora Nygatan).
Dance the night away – Stampen (5 Stora Nygatan) is a renowned venue for live jazz and blues.
Shop til you drop – Österlånggatan is lined with cute little shops. Try Knits (12 Österlånggatan) for fancy sweaters or head over to Kalikå (18 Österlånggatan) for beautiful, good-quality toys.
Centrally located, with beautiful architecture, this area has plenty to offer.
Sleep soundly – The Elite Palace Hotel (115 St Eriksgatan, , www.elite.se, rooms from €85/SEK 800) is one of Stockholm’s swankiest places to stay.
Culture vultures – Bonniers Konsthall (19 Torsgatan) shows contemporary Swedish and international art.
Must eat – Get delicacies from the sea at neighbourhood staple Wasahof (46 Dalagatan, 3440). It specialises in oysters. Sample Korean food at Koreana (76 Luntmakargatan, 7708).
Shop til you drop – For edgy fashion, pop into Carin Wester (24 Rörstrandsgatan). For beautiful, Middle Eastern-inspired candles, pillows and lamps, head to Spiti (64 Sveavägen).
Achingly fashionable, the streets here are overflowing with beautiful people. Great for shopping and strolling.
Sleep soundly – Clarion Hotel Stockholm (98 Ringvägen, tel. , www.clarionstockholm.com, rooms from €117/SEK 1,095) is every bit as cool as you’d expect from Söder. There’s also a club on the top floor.
Must eat – Roxy (6 Nytorget, tel. ) is a cosy neighbourhood spot with a Spanish-influenced menu and drinks list. Make sure to try one of the Cava cocktails. Head to Back A Yard (128 Folkungagatan, tel. ) for jerk chicken and a can of Red Stripe, served to a blaring reggae soundtrack.
Must drink – Kitschy El Mundo (21 Erstagatan) is tiny, loud and fun.
Dance the night away – Helenes Krog och Bar (31 Hornsgatan) is a lively venue with music varying from dancehall to rock.
Shop til you drop – Bruno (Götgatsbacken) is a trendy new shopping mall featuring American Apparel, Whyred, Miss Sixty and many other must-have labels.
