Faro International Airport
Bus: Eva Bus connects the airport with the city centre. Services run every 30 minutes from 7.05am to 9.15pm. The journey takes 20 minutes and a return ticket costs €4 while a single ticket costs €1,55.
Train: A single journey from the airport to Faro for up to four passengers costs around €15 and takes 15 minutes.
Tourist information: The main tourist office is at 8-11 Rua da Misericordia (tel. , visitportugal.com).
Fashionably understated, Faro’s bustling hub is all polite customer service, charming indifference and excellent value for money.

Culture vultures – Faro celebrates Easter with Procissão do Senhor Morto (Procession of our Dead Lord) on Good Friday. The eerie, torch-lit procession leaves Igreja da Misericórdia (Jardim Manuel Bívar) at 9.30pm.
Must eat – Catering to seafood aficionados since 1925, Dois Irmãos (15 Largo do Terreiro do Bispo, tel. ) is a culinary institution.
Dance the night away – Most of the city’s clubs and bars are concentrated around the Rua do Prior. Millennium III (21 Rua do Prior) is one of the best, with decent DJs and live music in a warehouse-style setting.
Shop til you drop – Nip into António Manuel (52 & 61 Rua de Santo António) for designer labels. Galeria das Patacas (38 Rua Ferreira Neto) is crammed full of antiques, collectibles and possibly even a kitchen sink. Boutique Caseira (25b Rua Baptista Lopes) stocks a scrumptious selection of homemade jams, liqueurs and other regional goodies.
Look for the graceful white storks that build nests on the ancient rooftops of the old quarter – the true inheritors of this cherished time capsule.
Culture vultures – Housed in a stunning 16th-century convent building, Infante Dom Henrique Archaeological Museum (Largo Dom Afonso III) offers a fascinating glimpse into Faro’s past. » Must eat To feast like a local, order bife à Portuguesa (Portuguese-style steak) at the quaint Vila Adentro (17 Largo Dom Afonso III, tel. ).

Must drink – Try Taverna da Sé (26 Largo Dom Afonso III) for sangria and nibbles in the day, or caipirinhas later.
The sweeping esplanade makes for a wonderful stroll, especially at sunset.
Sleep soundly – Enjoy the panorama across Ria Formosa from the rooftop terrace of Hotel Eva.
Culture vultures – Explore the protected Ria Formosa Natural Park by sightseeing boat. This beautiful nature reserve is made up of a line of barrier islands smothered with golden sand, sleepy fishing communities, and one or two excellent restaurants. Departures leave from the pontoon. And don’t forget your binoculars.
Must eat – Suigeneris (6 Avenida Nascente, Praia de Faro, tel. ) is a fashionable new restaurant with minimalist décor that attracts a design-savvy crowd. The menu errs towards modern Mediterranean.
Must drink – Soak up the harbour atmosphere over coffee and a snack at the smart Café do Coreto (Jardim Manuel Bívar).
Just 15 minutes’ drive north of the city, this is inland Algarve at its most serene – all that’s missing is the horse and cart.
Sleep soundly – Behind the noble façade of the Casa de Estói lies an elegant contemporary interior. Its six rooms are all named after wild flowers.
Culture vultures – Visit the Roman ruins of Milreu (Rua de Faro) to see the remnants of an extensive 1st-century villa and its adjoining buildings. A visitor centre provides a fascinating insight into the daily life of the area’s ancient Roman inhabitants.
Must eat – The Old Coach House (Monte do Casal, Cerro do Lobo, tel. ), an award-winning hotel restaurant set in botanical gardens, serves haute cuisine and fine wines.
Must drink – Bag a table outside homely Café Vanessa (Largo da Liberdade) and relax while watching rural life plod by.
