Getting around

Frankfurt Airport is 12km outside the city centre.

Train: The easiest way to get into the city centre is on regional S-Bahn lines S8 and S9. The journey takes about 11 to 13 minutes, and a single ticket costs around €4.
Taxi: A trip to the centre of Frankfurt costs about €20 and takes 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the traffic.
Tourist information: The main office is at Hauptbahnhof (tel. , frankfurttourismus. de).

WESTEND

The city’s much-heralded skyline might grab the headlines, but it belies the green metropolis led by the emerald expanse of Grüneburg Park, a former Rothschild estate.

Sleep soundly – For high design and amazing architecture, stay at Radisson SAS Hotel.

Culture vultures – Take a tropical tour of the botanical greenhouse at Palmengarten (Seismayerstrasse).

BORNHEIM

Head to Bornheimer Landstrasse and Berger Strasse for the best shops.

Must eat – Sip a reviving coffee in the calming white environs of Ich Weiss (34 Rothschildallee, tel. ).

Shop til you drop – Look for top-end womenswear at Anusha (39 Berger Strasse). For streetwear brands, go to Elite Kaufhaus (66 Berger Strasse). Gallery Schmuckraum (6 Bronheimer Landstrasse) does a great range of jewellery. Check out Das Landhaus (54 Berger Strasse) for homeware.

SACHSENHAUSEN

This vibrant part of town is slowly being gentrified. Join the chic crowd as they browse the boutiques and relax in the apfelwein (cider) pubs.

Sleep soundly – Located on the bank of the River Main, Gerbermühle has sleek, minimalist rooms.

Culture vultures – With one of the finest arts collections in the world, Städel Museum (63 Schaumainkai) has something for all tastes, from Rembrandt to Rubens, Monet to Matisse. Exhibitions in March include Constellations III, looking at works from the second half of the 20th century, and The Magic of Things, covering three centuries of still-life painting in Germany and the Netherlands from 1500 to 1800.

Must eat – For the best in local cuisine and apfelwein, make for Zum Feuerrädchen (24 Textorstrasse, 1313).

Shop til you drop – There are lots of boutiques here. Try Ichwareindirndl (52 Brückenstrasse) for vintage clothes, Jagdschloss (52 Brückenstrasse) for unusual accessories, and Designe, Kleine! (26 Wallstrasse) for jewellery.

INNENSTADT

Discover history and culture in the pedestrianised areas around Römer and the cathedral at the centre of the city.

Sleep soundly – The Westin Grand Frankfurt offers a true big-hotel experience. For a boutique vibe, try The Pure (86 Niddastrasse, tel. , the-pure.de, rooms from €160).

Culture vultures – The striking Schirn Kunsthalle (Römerberg) hosts great exhibitions. Women Impressionists is on during March, as is All-Inclusive, which looks at the evolution of tourism.

Must eat – For traditional cuisine, try Meyer’s Restaurant & Bar (54 Grosse Bockenheimer Strasse, tel. ), and the delicatessen next door.

Must drink – Enjoy the cool ambience at Helium (7 Bleidenstrasse).

Dance the night away – Silbergold (22 Heiligkreuzgasse) is the city’s newest electro venue.

HANAUER LANDSTRASSE

The factories straddling this street are now home to bars and clubs.

Sleep soundly – If you’re 25 or under, you can get a discount at Goldman 25Hours.

Must eat – For eclectic bars and cafés, head to Union Halle (188 Hanauer Landstrasse). Or try the restaurant and Refugium bar at Halle der Helden (192 Hanauer Landstrasse).

Dance the night away – Unity (2 Hanauer Landstrasse) is a good bet if you’re into soul and R’n’B.

Shop til you drop – You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to contemporary homewares at Ikarus (136 Hanauer Landstrasse) and Kontrast (297 Hanauer Landstrasse).
