Bus: Flygbussarna airport coaches stop at Nils Ericson Terminalen (the main bus station), Kungsportsplatsen (for the old town), Park Avenue (on Avenyn) and Korsvägen. A return ticket costs €15/SEK 140 and takes 30 minutes, with departures every 20 minutes during peak times.
Taxi: Taxis offer a fixed price for the 30-minute journey into town (about €36/SEK 338).
Tourist information: The main tourist office is located at 2 Kungsportsplatsen (2500, goteborg.com).
The oldest suburb of Gothenburg, founded in the 17th century on Queen Kristina’s orders, is well preserved, attractive and mostly residential.
Sleep soundly – There aren’t many hotels in Haga, but Göteborgs Mini-Hotel is one of the best value.
Culture vultures – Visit the 17th-century military fortress Skansen Kronan (Skansberget) and enjoy a great view of Gothenburg.
Must eat – The espresso machine works overtime at Italian-inspired Nöller Espressobar (28 Haga Nygata, 5351), which also serves tasty sandwiches. Vaktmästare Karlssons Matsal (3 Södra Allégatan, 0635) is located in a glass-walled courtyard behind the bathhouse.
Must drink – The unpretentious, friendly vibe at Hemma Hos (12 Haga Nygata) pulls in plenty of locals. The extensive list of wines by the glass adds to the appeal.
Shop til you drop – Drömma (3C Östra Skansgatan) – which means “to dream” in Swedish – is a super-cute store selling a dreamy mix of vintage and young fashion, with the focus firmly on dresses. Stop by Fanny Michel (6 Landsvägsgatan) for a great choice of shoes, bags and accessories.
Gothenburg’s most famous street is parade route Avenyn. This broad boulevard is lined with clubs, bars and cafés, ending at Götaplatsen Square.
Sleep soundly – Check into Clarion Collection Hotel Odin for sparse Swedish design, bright rooms and comfortable beds.
Culture vultures – Anyone with even a passing interest in contemporary photography and video art must visit Hasselblad Center (Götaplatsen).
Must eat – For fresh sushi and great sake, try Kafé Japan (8 Viktoriagatan, tel. ). The extravagant Avenyn No1 (1 Kungsportsavenyn, 7730) is home to several bars and restaurants with different themes.
Must drink – Loud and crowded, Gossip (13 Parkgatan) has a great happy hour.
Dance the night away – Världens Bar is a hugely popular club inside Göteborg Stadsteater (Götaplatsen). Live acts and DJs get the mixed crowd moving.
Shop til you drop – At Prickig Katt (19 Magasinsgatan) you can purchase all kinds of gifts, from fun accessories, hats and bags to art. Code by Jens (31-35 Kungsportsavenyn) stocks brands such as Miss Sixty and Svea.
The geographical centre of Gothenburg is surrounded by canals and water. It’s also home to some of the city’s best shopping, with malls, department stores and little boutiques.
Sleep soundly – Housed in a former tobacco factory, Hotel Vanilj (38 Kyrkogatan, tel. , hotelvanilj.se, rooms from €73/SEK 695) is an intimate hotel with the cosy feel of a bed and breakfast.
Culture vultures – Sticky Fingers (7 Kaserntorget) hosts live music events most nights of the week. Come here to see upand-coming bands from Gothenburg’s renowned local scene, as well as established touring acts.
Must eat – Palace (2 Södra Hamngatan, 7550) serves cross-over cuisine with lots of local ingredients under enormous crystal chandeliers. Located in a 16th-century cellar, Brasserie Ferdinand (39 Drottninggatan, tel. ) is a great place for steak. The beer selection is also excellent.
Must drink – Hello Monkey (26 Magasinsgatan) serves exotic, Asian-inspired drinks. There’s also a spa below for further relaxing. » Shop til you drop Visit upscale department store NK (42 Östra Hamngatan) for high-end shopping. Along Vallgatan there are many shops featuring Scandinavian designs, among them Krypton Form (17 Vallgatan).
