PÖSELDORF

Lined with late 19th-century townhouses and neoclassical mansions, this tiny quarter is a favourite with the well-heeled.

Sleep soundly – Rooms at the newly revamped Grand Elysée are decked out in marble and cherry-wood. The nearby Radisson SAS is housed in the city’s tallest building.

Culture vultures – Founded in 1879, the Völkerkunde Museum (64 Rothenbaumchaussee) is one of Europe’s most important ethnological museums.

Must eat – Block House (122 Mittelweg, tel. ) serves unfailingly good steak.

Shop til you drop – Gundlach (1 Milchstr) has fantastic accessories and shoes. Fashion mavens should also head to nearby Perlen Müller (1 Milchstr) for a great selection of jewellery.

KIEZ

Encompassing St. Pauli and Altona as well as the Reeperbahn, this is the city’s entertainment district, packed with restaurants, bars and theatres.

Sleep soundly – The newly opened Empire Riverside Hotel, designed by noted architect David Chipperfield, boasts spectacular harbour views.

Culture vultures – Peruse provocative works dating from 1520 to the present – including some by Delacroix and Picasso – at the Erotic Art Museum (69 Bernhard-Nocht-Str).

Dance the night away – China Lounge (14 Norbistor) is something of a Hamburg institution, and its three levels of chinoiserie-themed decadence continue to pull in big crowds. Or try Die Welt ist schön (4 Neuer Pferdemarkt), a multi-level bar and lounge with Eames-style furnishings.

EPPENDORFER

Fêted by affluent locals and studded with boutiques, this smart quarter sells everything from bohemian kaftans to bespoke scents.

Sleep soundly – Once an elegant fin de siècle Georgian residence, the Hotel Abtei, is Hamburg’s most exclusive bolthole.

Must eat – Brücke (82 Innocentiastr, ) is an atmospheric eatery as renowned for its continental cuisine as for its long waits. Nearby Maral (22 Eppendorfer Baum, tel. ), situated on the canal, serves superb sushi and Pan-Asian dishes.

Shop til you drop – This district is fantastic for shopping. Pick up vintage at D’Or Antiquitäten (6 Eppendorfer Baum), on-trend pieces at Closed (13 Eppendorfer Baum), and boho-glam stuff at Gosche (5 Eppendorfer Baum).

CITY CENTRE

Restored to its former glory following the Great Fire of 1842 and the ravages of World War II, the city’s commercial heart is punctuated by two lively shopping boulevards, Spitalerstrasse and Mönckebergstrasse.

Sleep soundly – The Steigenberger, overlooks the pretty Fleet Canal. It includes a day spa, as well as a restaurant serving high-quality Asian fusion food.

Culture vultures – The Deichtorhallen (1-2 Deichtorstr) offers an ever-changing roster of contemporary exhibitions.

Must eat – D.O.C. (56-58 Jungfernstieg, tel. ) is one of the renovated waterfront’s most exciting eateries. Set in a stunning glass cube, it serves modern Italian dishes. For something more inventive, head to Fusion (49 Drehbahn, tel. ), which offers good Eurasian food in starkly minimalist surroundings.

Dance the night away – Around the corner from the main train terminal, Golden Cut (12-14 Ernst-Merck-Str) serves Asian food in stylish surroundings, with a hip discothèque next door.
