Son Sant Joan Airport is about 8km east of the city.
Bus: The line 1 bus links the airport to Palma. It runs every 15 minutes from 6am to 2am, and costs €1,85. For island-wide bus connections, alight at Plaza España.
Taxi: A taxi from the airport to the city centre will take about 15 minutes and cost around €20.
Tourist information: The main office is at 2 Plaça de la Reina (tel. , illesbalears.es).
With its graceful architecture and sinfully pricey designer brands, Jaume III has a distinct air of exclusivity.
Sleep soundly – Modern newcomer Jaime III (14 Carrer Passeig de Mallorca, tel. , hotelhmjaimeiii.com, rooms from €155) is super-stylish.
Culture vultures – During Setmana Santa (Easter week) the spectacular procession of La Sang (the venerated icon of Christ) takes place in this area.
Must drink – Ca’n Joan de S’Aigo (10 Carrer de Ca’n Sanç) is a cosy tearoom serving authentic Mallorcan pastries.
Shop til you drop – Just a stiletto-stab from department store El Corte Inglés (15 Carrer Jaume III) are Jaime Mascaró (10 Carrer Jaume III) and the exclusive Carmina (4 Carrer de la Unió), both a must for shoe fetishists.
Just off Plaça Rei Joan Carles I, this lively district is full of quirky boutiques.
Culture vultures – Can Solleric (27 Carrer Born) is an 18th-century mansion converted into a contemporary gallery.
Must eat – Sushi Club (7 Carrer Torre de Peraires, tel. ) serves good oriental dishes, while Espai2 (2 Carrer Puigdorfila, tel. ) puts modern Italian cuisine back on the map.
Shop til you drop – Chocoholics need look no further than Frasquet (4 Carrer Orfila) and La Pajarita (2 Carrer San Nicolas). For classic toys head for La Industrial (8 Carrer Quint). El Regalo (8 Carrer Jovellanos) is good for gifts.
Seemingly overnight Palma’s old town has become the bedrock for the city’s design businesses. There are also lots of contemporary galleries here.
Sleep soundly – Try one of two grand old mansions – homely Hotel Dalt Murada (6a Carrer Almudaina, tel. , daltmurada.com, rooms from €100) or the elegant Palacio Ca Sa Galesa (8 Carrer Miramar, tel. , palaciocasagalesa.com, rooms from €310).
Culture vultures – No visit to Palma is complete without a stroll around the magnificent Gothic Cathedral La Seu (Passeig Marítim), and a look at the nearby Almudaina Palace.
Must eat – Try Restaurant Singular (9 Carrer Montenegro, tel. ) for traditional Spanish dishes or Bruselas (4 Carrer S’Estanc, tel. ) for Argentinean specialties.
Dance the night away – Hobbit fans should head for the Tolkien-themed Lorien Bar (5a Carrer Caputxines). For jazz and Latin music try Lisboa (33 Carrer Sant Magí). For live blues head for Bluesville (3 Carrer Mà del Moro).
This historic square opposite the main bus station is becoming increasingly popular, largely for its grand cafés and labyrinth of lively shopping streets.
Sleep soundly – Tucked away in a private courtyard is chic retreat Misión de San Miguel (1a Calle Can Maçanet, tel. , hotelmisiondesanmiguel.com, rooms from €110). It’s tranquil and excellent value.
Culture vultures – Don’t miss the stylish Museo d’Art Espanyol Contemporani (11 Carrer Sant Miquel) which houses stunning contemporary work by Barceló, Dalí, Picasso and Miró.
Must eat – Basmati (2 Carrer Santa Catalina de Siena, tel. ) serves accomplished Indian cuisine that has won it a loyal clientele. Almost next door, La Cuchara (4 Carrer Santa Catalina de Siena, tel. ) offers cocina de cuchara – traditional Spanish cuisine eaten with a spoon.
Must drink – The urbane Café Cappuccino (53 Carrer Sant Miquel) is renowned for its excellent service, while Café Món (1 Avenida Joan March Ordinas) serves heavenly Cuban mojitos.
Shop til you drop – A mere hop from bustling indoor market Mercat de l’Olivar is gastronomic emporium Son Vivot (1 Plaça de la Porta Pintada). If you’re interested in antique books and prints, make time to visit Librería Ripoll (12 Carrer Sant Miquel).
