Lisbon Airport
Bus: The Aerobus leaves every 20 minutes from 7.40am to 11pm and goes to the city centre, finishing at Cais do Sodré. Tickets cost €3 and can be bought onboard.
Taxi: It’s about a 20 minute taxi ride to the city centre. The fare costs approximately €15, with an extra charge for luggage in the boot. Prices increase by 20% at night and on weekends and bank holidays.
Tourist information: The Lisboa Welcome Centre is located at Praça do Comércio, on the corner of Rua do Arsenal (tel. , www.atl-turismolisboa.pt).

Culture vultures – The Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (9 Rua das Janelas Verdes) houses the country’s largest collection of works by Portuguese painters, among other treasures.
Must eat – Those with hearty appetites should try the traditional Portuguese dishes at Tromba Rija (254 Rua Cintura do Porto de Lisboa, tel. ).
Dance the night away – The Loft (6 Rua do Instituto Industrial) attracts a young, fashionable crowd.
Shop til you drop – The avant-garde Santos da Casa (49a Avenida Dom Carlos I) is stocked with designer furniture, textiles and accessories.

Sleep soundly – Head to the relaxing Lisboa Regency (114 Rua Nova do Almada, tel. , regency-hotels-resorts.com, rooms from €150) for clever fusion décor and inspiring rooftop views.
Culture vultures – The Museu Arqueológico do Carmo (Largo do Carmo) is housed in the imposing ruins of the 15th-century Convento do Carmo.
Must eat – Try the superb entrecôte steak at La Brasserie de L’Entrecôte (117 Rua do Alecrim, tel. ) – it comes with a herb sauce, crispy walnut salad and pommes frites on the side.
Shop til you drop – For an original gift, pop into A Vida Portuguesa (11 Rua Anchieta) to buy quirky toiletries, handicrafts, stationery and jewellery. The bijou Luvaria Ulisses (87a Rua do Carmo) sells beautiful handmade gloves.
Always lively and sometimes decadent, this is the party zone, where sleep can seem like a figment of the imagination
Must eat – Popular local restaurant 1 de Maio (8 Rua da Atalaia, tel. ) serves up simple but wholesome meat and fish dishes.
Must drink – Bedroom’s (86 Rua do Norte) eye-catching interior is fashioned from various beds and settees.
Dance the night away – Celebrated Portuguese installation artist Joana Vasconcelos designed the funky interior at bar/club Napron (111 Rua da Barroca).
This fascinating quarter, a maze of winding streets and alleyways, is undeniably alluring.
Sleep soundly – Hidden behind the walls of Castelo de São Jorge, the intimate Solar do Castelo is the perfect romantic bolthole.
Culture vultures – Handsome Museuescola de Artes Decorativas (2 Largo das Portas do Sol) has a fine collection of 17th- and 18th-century antiques.
Must eat – Hear authentic Portuguese blues at Parreirinha de Alfama (1 Beco do Espírito Santo, tel. ), one of the city’s best fado restaurants.
Must drink – The kiosk café on Largo das Portas do Sol square enjoys an outstanding view – right over Alfama and out to the Tagus estuary.
Lisbon’s former Expo 98 site is themed around the world’s oceans. There’s some really remarkable cutting-edge architecture here.
Sleep soundly – The four-star Tivoli Oriente is near to all amenities.
Culture vultures – The spectacular Oceanário (Esplanade D. Carlos I) is Europe’s largest oceanarium and home to 500 different species of marine plants and animals. Great for all the family.
Shop til you drop – The striking Centro Vasco da Gama (Alameda dos Oceanos) is the place to go if you’re after retail therapy on a grand scale. There are also plenty of restaurants here and a multiplex cinema.
