ALTSTADT

Centred on the Marienplatz, the city’s old town is packed with history. Take in impressive architecture, exclusive shops and plenty of places to sample the local cuisine and beer.

Sleep soundly – Located on Munich’s most exclusive shopping street, the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski is a classy, comfortable place. Or sample the Bavarian charm at the rustic Platzl Hotel.

Culture vultures – Art is big in Munich – catch world-class exhibitions at the Haus der Kunst (1 Prinzregentenstraße) and the Kunsthalle (8 Theatinerstraße), which features the works of 19th-century realist Adolph Menzel this month.

Must eat – For Bavarian food with a modern twist, sample the well-priced dishes at Marktwirt (2 Heiliggeiststraße, tel. ). A classier alternative is Blauer Bock (9 Sebastiansplatz, 1780). Its set lunch menu offers unbeatable value for money.

Must drink – If you’re after Bavarian spirit, call in at the Hofbräuhaus (9 Platzl), the city’s No.1 tourist attraction.

Dance the night away – Mingle with Munich’s beautiful people at 8seasons (2 Maximilianstraße).

Shop til you drop – From designer goodies to local costumes – Ludwig Beck (11 Marienplatz) has it all.

ISARVORSTADT

Situated on the banks of the River Isar, Isarvorstadt is currently Munich’s most up-and-coming district and is enjoying a boom in bars, restaurants and shops.

Sleep soundly – You’ll get quirky little rooms for extremely reasonable prices at the quaint Mariandl.

Culture vultures – A trip to the Deutsches Museum (1 Museumsinsel) – one of Europe’s leading science museums – is a fascinating experience for visitors of all ages with its hands-on exhibits and live shows.

Must eat – For a special treat, indulge in some creative cuisine at G Munich (52 Geyerstraße, tel. ), currently one of the city’s most talked-about restaurants.

Must drink – While the bar scene in Isarvorstadt changes constantly, Zoozie’z (15 Wittelsbacherstraße) has been a classic drinking spot for more than 25 years.

BOGENHAUSEN

Perched above the River Isar, Bogenhausen is one of Munich’s most upmarket areas, with street after street of classy art nouveau villas.

Sleep soundly – The charming Hotel Ritzi has an intimate atmosphere and 25 individually designed rooms.

Culture vultures – The architecturally impressive Prinzregententheater (12 Prinzregentenplatz) hosts a wide variety of shows, from classic plays to wine and music evenings. Art nouveau lovers should take a trip to Villa Stück (60 Prinzregentenstraße). In May, this museum will run an exhibition of photography focusing on hair.
