Sweden : Stockholm - May 2008

Country Code: Dial for Sweden

Springtime in Stockholm sees the city’s inhabitants flood the sidewalk cafés and parks. The warmer weather also means splendid views of sparkling blue water, dotted with white boats, from almost anywhere in this city of islands, while the shopping, dining and nightlife remain world class. Victoria Larsson gets out there

Getting around

Airport is 8km west of the city.

Bus: Flygbussarna buses link the airport with Stockholm’s bus/train station, Cityterminalen. The journey costs €14/ SEK 130 return and takes 20 minutes, with departures every 20 minutes at peak times.
Taxi: Licensed cabs are available outside the terminal. The fare to the city centre is about €20/SEK 186.
Tourist information: The main office is at 27 Hamngatan, with the entrance on Kungsträdgården (tel. , stockholmtown.com).

NORRMALM

The area around the central station and Sergels Torg may not be the most picturesque part of town, but there’s lots here for shopaholics and foodies.

Sleep soundly – The Gert Wingårdh-designed Clarion Hotel Sign has a rooftop pool and a spa with a fantastic view.

Culture vultures – Strindbergsmuseet (85 Drottninggatan), playwright August Strindberg’s home, will give you an insight into turn-of-the-century Stockholm life.

Must eat – The menu at F12 (12 Fredsgatan, 8052) is divided into two sections, ‘tradition’ and ‘innovation’. For something more low-key, try Coffehouse by George (53 Drottninggatan, 6050).

Must drink – Restaurang Prinsen (4 Mäster Samuelsgatan) is a classic bistro that’s been around since 1897.

Shop til you drop – If you’re crazy about shoes, check out SkoUno (34 Gamla Brogatan).

ÖSTERMALM

This is the ritziest part of town. Come here for all-night dancing or some seriously high-end shopping.

Sleep soundly – Stay close to the action at the opulent Elite Plaza Hotel.

Culture vultures – Dramaten (1 Nybroplan), Stockholm’s Royal Theatre, is well worth a visit even if you don’t speak the language.

Must eat – Sturehof (2 Stureplan, tel. ) serves good seafood in a chandelier-lit setting. East meets West at Annakhan (12 Riddargatan, tel. ), where the Indian and Pakistani cuisine bears a distinctly Scandinavian stamp.

Must drink – Erik’s Bakficka (4 Fredrikhovsgatan) is more laid back than most of the bars around Stureplan.

Dance the night away – The champagne flows til 5am at Solidaritet (3 Lästmakargatan).

Shop til you drop – Luxe lingerie store Agent Provocateur (9 Birger Jarlsgatan) has recently set up shop here. Head to Chanesse First & Second Hand Boutique (1 Grev Turegatan) for upscale vintage clothing. This is the place to find barely used Louis Vuitton bags for a fraction of the original price.

VASASTAN

This gentle residential district’s got a lot to offer – great restaurants, some quirky shopping and beautiful streets.

Sleep soundly – Step outside the Hotel Tegnérlunden into a park filled with lilac bushes and chestnut trees.

Must eat – The tiny Musslan (46 Dalagatan, 6410) serves great fish. Xe Om (3 Gästrikegatan, 1515) does delicious Vietnamese food.

Must drink – Pub Anchor (90 Sveavägen) is a friendly neighbourhood bar that pulls in a mixed crowd.

Shop til you drop – Rörstrandsgatan is a charming street lined with cafés and sweet little shops. Head to Fifty-Fifty (11 Rörstrandsgatan) for antiques and art, or Plagg (8 Rörstrandsgatan) for chic labels.

HORNSTULL

Once a run-down district, Honrstull’s now the site of lots of new development.

Sleep soundly – Situated on a tiny green island, the simple, bright Långholmen Hotel was once a prison.

Must eat – Enjoy a schnitzel and a beer at Austrian outpost Moldau (33 Bergsunds Strand, 7548). La Casa (21 Högalidsgatan, tel. ) serves the best pizza in Stockholm.

Must drink – M-bargo (37 Bergsunds Strand) is modern and colourful. Cheap drinks attract a young, artsy crowd.

Shop til you drop – Many young local designers have little stores in this part of town. Check out Jenny Hellström (11 Hornstulls Strand) for cool hoodies, tailored skirts and dresses. Mickes Vinyl (20 Långholmsgatan) has a vast selection of vinyl, CDs and comic books.
