Situated on the picturesque, rocky west coast of Sweden, Gothenburg is a fantastic summer destination. Bus: Flygbussarna airport coaches stop at Nils Ericson Terminalen (the main bus station), Kungsportsplatsen (for the old town), Park Avenue (on Avenyn) and Korsvägen. A return ticket costs €15/SEK 140 and takes 30 minutes, with departures every 20 minutes during peak times.
Taxi: Taxis offer a fixed price for the 30-minute journey into town (about €36/SEK 338).
Tourist information: The main tourist office is located at 2 Kungsportsplatsen (2500, goteborg.com).
The geographical centre of Gothenburg is home to the city’s main artery Avenyn, café-lined shopping street Vasagatan and Gothenburg’s oldest quarter, Kronhusbodarna.
Sleep soundly – The four-star Hotel Riverton (rooms from €144/SEK 1345) has two restaurants, a sky bar and a relaxation lounge where guests can enjoy saunas and a Jacuzzi.
Culture vultures – Head to the stunning, modern Göteborgsoperan to admire the architecture, see an opera or have dinner and drinks.
Must eat – Michelin-starred Fond serves modern Swedish cuisine alongside an unbeatable view of the city. Or have lunch in the cobblestoned courtyard of Café Kronhuset (6-8 Postgatan, tel. ), a timeless favourite.
Must drink – The large outdoor patio at Vasastan is perfect for whiling away long summer nights
Dance the night away – Lounge(s) is like a department store for clubbers – choose between five different floors and five different atmospheres.
A charming part of town, Linnéstaden’s home to Fiskekyrkan, a seafood market that looks like a church, and the rolling green hills of Slottskogen.
Sleep soundly – Hotel Lilton (rooms from €75/SEK 695) has 20 rooms facing a quiet courtyard.
Must eat – Yammy serves Korean and Japanese food in low-lit surroundings. Catch some rays at the ever-popular sidewalk cåfé Solsidan (42 Linnégatan, 1221).
Must drink – Rumpan Bar is a laid-back place with a big terrace. If the night is a little chilly, there are heating lamps and blankets available.
Dance the night away – Pustervik is a one-stop shop for entertainment, staging club nights, table tennis matches and live acts.
Shop til you drop – Hoga Interiör has a great selection of knick-knacks, kitchen accessories and furniture from the 50s and 60s. For classic Finnish textiles and patterns, head to Marimekko (33A Haga Nygata).
Once a working-class part of town, Majorna is now a largely residential neighbourhood with a lovely, laid-back atmosphere. Take streetcar No.11 to Saltholmen and transfer (on the same ticket) to one of the gorgeous islands of the archipelago.
Sleep soundly – Spar Hotel Majorna (rooms from €90/ SEK 845) has recently undergone a major facelift. Newly stylish, it’s now got a spacious bar on the entrance floor.
Culture vultures – In Kulturreservatet Klippan, an historic area by the harbour, many buildings date back to the days of East India Company trade.
Must eat – Situated right next to the harbour, Sjömagasinet also has a Michelin star and serves excellent seafood. Try their poached turbot with brown butter and horseradish. The popular Café Marmelad (17 Mariagatan, 1390) has a huge menu and an outdoor terrace.
Must drink – Göta’s Bar&Kök is famous for its wood-burning pizza ovens, but it’s also a great place to stop for a drink, especially in the summer when you can sit outside.
Shop til you drop – An odd little store, Änglashopen is entirely devoted to angels. Pluto (32 EA Rosengrens Gata) sells design pieces.
