In recent years, Newcastle has risen from the ashes of economic gloom, building on its strong industrial heritage to become a thriving modern metropolis with booming nightlife and an abundance of tempting restaurants. With winter’s vicious easterly winds now a mere memory, Marissa Carruthers finds June the ideal time to visit

Train: Metros also run directly from the airport to various locations across the city centre. Trains depart every 15 minutes until 11.59pm. The journey from the airport to the city centre takes 20 minutes and a single ticket costs €2,66/£2.10
Taxi: You can pick a taxi up from outside Arrivals. The journey to the city centre will cost about €12/£10 and takes 10 minutes.
Tourist information: Newcastle Tourist Information Centre is at 8-9 Central Arcade in the city centre (tel. ).
Stroll down the stunning Grey Street and hit the city’s historic core, Grainger Town, for some of the finest shops, restaurants and bars in the city.
Sleep soundly – Stay right in the thick of things at the grand Victorian Royal Station Hotel.
Culture vultures – Check out the Theatre Royal (Grey Street) for some of the best plays outside London’s West End.
Must eat – Tucked away on a quiet, cobbled backstreet, Le Normand (54-56 Low Friar Street, tel. ) does fine French cuisine. Otherwise, savour locally sourced food to the sound of sizzling jazz at family-run Gershwins (54 Dean Street, tel. ).
Must drink – If it’s cocktails in trendy bars you’re after, hit Collingwood Street. Try Apartment (28-32 Collingwood Street) for classy drinks and good music.
Dance the night away – Digital (Times Square) stages indie, electro, rock and dance nights.
Shop til you drop – Augment your wardrobe with a stylish find in Maverick (22 Nunn Street) or pick up high-street bargains on Northumberland Street.
Hidden away along the Tyne, Ouseburn Valley is home to the city’s musicians. Full of quirky charm, it’s the perfect place to soak up the sun or go sailing on the water.
Culture vultures – Browse through the works of more than 70 artists at The Art Works Galleries (Stepney Bank) and stop for a coffee at its cheerful little café.
Must eat – Housed in what was once a 1930s pub, the Corner House Hotel (Heaton Road, tel. ) does good food with great hospitality.
Must drink – The Tanners (1 Byker Bridge) serves some of the region’s finest ales to the sound of the city’s best DJs.
Dance the night away – The Cluny (36 Lime Street) is always good for live music.
Set on the banks of the River Tyne, the city’s Quayside is the perfect setting for a summer evening’s drinking. There are plenty of bars and restaurants with outdoor seating and unparalled views of the Millennium Bridge.
Sleep soundly – The Hilton Newcastle Gateshead is the latest polished addition to the city’s expanding Quayside and has a gym, swimming pool and executive lounge.
Culture vultures – The Quayside is home to the city’s iconic Sage Gateshead, Europe’s biggest performance venue. Gaze out at the Tyne’s bridges before catching a concert in one of its three music halls.
Must drink – Take your drink on to the terrace at retro bar Stereo (Sandgate) and bask in the sun.
This leafy suburb offers welcome respite from busy city life with sprawling parks, sophisticated shopping and fine dining.
Sleep soundly – Stay in the lap of luxury at the Swallow Hotel. If you want to be at the heart of the action, try The Jesmond Hotel.
Culture vultures – The Biscuit Factory (16 Stoddard Street) exhibits a range of works from local and national artists.
Must eat – Take a walk through the picturesque Jesmond Dene, meet farm animals then stop off for lunch. Sample regional delights at The Fisherman’s Lodge. If you’re after good Indian food, try Eastern Lounge.
Dance the night away – Hit the dance floor at Mr Lynch (Archbold Terrace). Make sure you try one of the excellent ginger mojitos.
