THE KREMLIN

They say everything in Russia revolves around the Kremlin, and this includes the city’s restaurant scene and its vibrant nightlife.

Sleep soundly – Tucked away on a quiet back street, Courtyard Marriott caters for business travellers and tourists alike. It’s especially good if you’re looking for a bargain.

Must eat – Get up close and personal with elitny (elite) excess at Next Door (9 Vozdvizhenka Ulitsa, ), a glitzy restaurant that serves modern European food and stages live music most nights. Café Muar (5/25 Vozdvizhenka Ulitsa, ) is housed in an architecture museum, and has a stylishly minimalist take on both design and food.

Must drink – After the stock markets close, city boys head straight for upscale watering holes such as Wall Street Bar (9/1 Volkhonka Ulitsa).

Shop til you drop – Buy one-of-a-kind objects for your home made by Russian designers at the Art Lebedev Studio store (35 Bolshaya Nikitskaya Ulitsa).

KAMERGERSKY PEREULOK

Take respite from Tverskaya traffic on Kamergersky Pereulok, a pedestrian street where outdoor terraces stay packed throughout summer.

Culture vultures – Founded in 1898, Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre (3 Kamergersky Pereulok) puts on powerful performances of the classics. For centuries Kuznetsky Most has been Moscow’s high-end shopping district, home to designer boutiques and chic cafés.

Must eat – Recline on pillows at Ketama (5/6 Bolshaya Dmitrovka, ), a Moroccan restaurant with otherworldly décor. For Kamergersky people-watching, pull up a chair at Le Pain Quotidien (6 Kamergersky Pereulok, ), a rustic café-cum-bakery that specialises in open sandwiches.

Shop til you drop – Tea, Coffee and Other Colonial Goods (3 Kamergersky Pereulok) is one of the best places to purchase portable little presents.

PARK KULTURY

With its carnival rides, barbecues and busy nightspots, Moscow’s culture park always thrums with life.

Culture vultures – Countless 20th-century masterpieces are housed at the state’s New Tretyakov Gallery (10 Krymsky Val Ulitsa).

Must eat – For a view of the park and an unforgettable home-style meal, try Mama Zoya (16 Frunzenskaya Naberezhnaya). Housed in an ornate boat moored on the Moskva river, it serves traditional Georgian cuisine such as pkhali (a paste of spinach, garlic and walnuts). The grilled lamb here is also excellent.

Dance the night away – Long after the children have left the park, open-air club Lebedinoye Ozero (9 Krymsky Val Ulitsa) keeps the grown-ups entertained with a roster of international DJs.

Shop til you drop – Bring authentic Russian contemporary art home from the Central House of Artists (10 Krymsky Val Ulitsa). The unofficial art market outside also offers cheaper works by less established artists.

HERMITAGE GARDEN

This central park has hosted open-air concerts since the 19th century.

Sleep soundly – Popular with style-conscious travellers, Golden Apple Boutique Hotel offers intimate accommodation in a central location.

Must eat – The pillow-laden outdoor couches are a hot commodity at Chaikhona No. 1 (3 Karetny Ryad Ulitsa, tel 2), where you’ll experience the dubious pleasures of Uzbek hookah smoking.

Must drink – Glamorous hot spot and art café Galereya (27 Ulitsa Petrovka) is open 24 hours a day, which makes it a perennial favourite with the after-hours crowd.
