Many cities come into their own during summer, but Munich’s pretty hard to beat, packed as it is with shady beer gardens, cool museums and riverside beaches. And if you do start to wilt, you can escape to the snow-capped mountains nearby. Jill Henne catches some rays
Hamburg Airport
Bus: Buses leave for the city centre every 20 minutes, from 6am to 10pm. A single ticket costs €10, and a return costs €16.
Train: The journey from the airport to Hauptbahnhof (Munich’s central station) takes 40 minutes. The S1 and S8 trains run every 10 minutes and a single ticket costs €8,80.
Taxi: The average taxi fare to the city centre is €55 (€65 during rush hour).
Tourist information: There are two offices, at the main station (2 Bahnhofsplatz) and in the town hall (Neues Rathaus) in Marienplatz (tel. , www.muenchen.de).
No visit to Munich would be complete without a stroll around the old city centre, where you’ll find venerable buildings set alongside modern shopping arcades and bustling beer gardens.
Sleep soundly – Live it up at the Maximilian Munich Apartments & Hotel. Otherwise, Cortiina Hotel is a paradise for design lovers.
Culture vultures – This month sees the famous Opera Festival in Munich, which runs until 31 July (for programmes and ticket information, visit muenchner-opern-festspiele.de). If you can’t get tickets, the open-air Oper für Alle (operfueralle.de) on 12 and 13 July includes free concerts held behind the opera house.
Must eat – Viktualienmarkt is a great place to stock up on fresh food, before enjoying a picnic in the market’s beer garden. Foodies should also pay a trip to the Michelin-starred Schuhbecks in den Südtiroler Stuben (6-8 Platzl, tel. ).
Must drink – Sample Munich’s finest brew at the city’s number one tourist attraction, Hofbraühaus (9 Platzl).
Shop til you drop – Pick up traditional pieces for your home and garden at Manufactum (12 Dienerstrasse).
One of the most desirable residential areas in Munich, Lehel is full of classy bars, shops and restaurants.
Sleep soundly – Hotel Opéra offers a taste of bygone elegance.
Culture vultures – Bayerisches Nationalmuseum (3 Prinzregentenstrasse) is one of Europe’s leading art and cultural history museums.
Must eat – Gandl (Sankt-Anna-Platz, tel. ) has been wooing a loyal Munich clientele for years with delicious French and Italian food. For true Bavarian cuisine, head straight to Mariannenhof (1 Mariannenstrasse, 0864).
Must drink – One of Munich’s most fashionable restaurants, Nektar (Praterinsel) has just opened a beach on the river Isar with a barbecue and a cocktail bar. La Stanza (13 Sankt-Anna-Strasse) is a little Italian-style bar with a great atmosphere.
Home to Munich’s French quarter, Haidhausen is also packed with tasteful bars, shops and restaurants.
Culture vultures – Catch a classical concert at Gasteig Philharmonic Hall (5 Rosenheimerstrasse), which also runs regular art exhibitions.
Must eat – Sample excellent Italian cuisine at Vinaiolo (42 Steinstrasse, tel. ). For laid-back bar snacks, try Café Voilá (5 Wörthstrasse, tel. ).
Must drink – Der Hofbräukeller am Wiener Platz (19 Innere Wiener Strasse) is a great place to experience Munich’s beer garden culture. Sip ale by the litre under the chestnut trees.
Dance the night away – Ring the doorbell to gain entry to quirky bar Maria Passagne (42 Steinstrasse).For live concerts, check out Ampere (4 Zellstrasse), which has a beer garden.
Just a short hop from the city centre, Maxvorstadt is good for world-class museums and buzzing student bars.
Culture vultures – You could pass days in the three Pinakotheken (Barer Strasse), art galleries exhibiting work that ranges from classic to modern. Lenbachhaus (33 Luisenstrasse) has a wealth of pieces by Kandinsky.
Must eat – For something different, try South American cuisine at Bardales (2 Blutenburgstrasse, tel. ), or reputedly Munich’s biggest schnitzel at Steinheil (16 Steinheilstrasse, 7488).
Must drink – Relax on the comfy sofas in the lounge at Volksgarten (50 Briennerstrasse).
