Prague in the summertime is a force to be reckoned with. From its verdant beer gardens to its calendar packed with seasonal music, outdoor concerts and cultural festivals, this is a city that truly sparkles when the sun is out. Julie O’Shea gives us the inside scoop
Ruzyne International Airport
Bus: The number 119 bus runs between the airport and the Dejvicka metro station (which is on the A line) every 7 to 20 minutes. Tickets cost €1/CZK 28 and are valid for 60 minutes on weekdays and 90 minutes on weekends. They can be used on all buses, trams and metros.
Taxi: A taxi ride to the city centre from the airport will take about 30 minutes and cost approximately €25/ CZK 704, but always negotiate the price before you set off.

Prague’s new town is packed with good clubs and excellent restaurants.
Sleep soundly – If you like to be close to the action, Hotel Tyl is a good choice. Hotel Da Vinci is also in the thick of things, but costs a little more.
Culture vultures – Check out the soaring 19th-century architecture at Národní Divadlo (1 Ostrovni), the national theatre. It’s staging an impressive programme of ballet and opera throughout the summer.
Must eat – Swing by U Fleku (11 Kremencova, tel. ) for traditional cuisine and a pint or two of its famous dark beer. For something a little more elegant, try the French food at La Perle de Prague (80 Rasinovo Nábrezí, tel. ), on the top floor of the Dancing House.
Dance the night away – The party just keeps on going at Beer Factory (58 Václavské Námestí), where the music plays into the early hours
Shop til you drop – Modeo Boutique (28 Vodickova) is well stocked with unique dresses and shirts.
There’s breathtaking scenery around every corner in Prague’s old town.
Sleep soundly – The classy Hotel Leonardo sits on the banks of the Vltava river. Hotel Casa Marcello is a little more modest.
Culture vultures – Mug up on African and Egyptian history at Náprstkovo Muzeum (1 Betlémské Námestí).
Must eat – Satisfy your sweet tooth at Cream & Dream (12 Husova, tel. ), the best ice-cream parlour in Prague. If you’re eating on the hoof, you can pick up a sandwich and a drink at Culinaria Praha (9 Skorepka, tel. ). Otherwise, grab a table and try the grilled chicken plate or Thai duck.
Must drink – There’s always something cool on tap at Duende (30 Karoliny Svetlé) near Charles Bridge.
Shop til you drop – Pick up some Czech glass jewellery or a souvenir T-shirt at Blue Praha (2 Celetná).
This district of Prague takes its name from the vineyards that once covered the whole area. Nowadays, its packed with cozy pubs and beautiful parks.
Sleep soundly – Sieber Hotel has criminally comfortable rooms and some of the best service in the city.
Must eat – Restaurant Amigos (16 Anny Letenské, tel. ) does excellent enchiladas.
Must drink – Riegrovy Sady beer garden (take tram 11 to Vinohradská Trznice) attracts a young crowd and is one of the best places in the city to soak up some of the summer heat.
Once a slightly insalubrious area, Zizkov is currently undergoing a bit of a renaissance, with bars and cafés springing up everywhere.
Sleep soundly – If you decide to stay around here, your best bet is one of the area’s hostels. Clown & Bard Hostel and Hostel Elf are both pretty lively.
Must eat – Restaurace U Houdku (10 Borivojova, tel. ) does a good selection of local dishes and has plenty of outdoor seating.If you want great panoramic views to go with your meal, head for the restaurant at Zizkov television tower(1 Mahlerovy Sady, tel. ), which is 66 metres above Prague.
Must drink – Start your night in style with a cocktail at the fashionable Infinity (2a Chrudimská).
