Germany : Frankfurt - August 2008

Country Code: Dial for Germany

As one of the world’s busiest fi nancial centres, Frankfurt has its fair share of gleaming skyscrapers and gourmet restaurants. But behind this glossy façade, there are medieval streets and courtyards, expansive green parks, museums, cultural centres and lively apfelwein (cider) pubs. Carole French heads for its liveliest stadtbezirkes

Getting around

Frankfurt Airport is 12km outside the city centre.

Train: The easiest way to get into the city centre is on regional S-Bahn lines S8 and S9. The journey takes about 11 to 13 minutes, and a single ticket costs around €4.
Taxi: A trip to the centre of Frankfurt costs about €20 and takes 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the traffic.
Tourist information: The main office is at Hauptbahnhof (tel. , frankfurttourismus. de).

CITY CENTRE

Life in the heart and soul of Frankfurt revolves around the Konstablerwache (a huge food market) and the Zeil (the pedestrianised shopping street).

Sleep soundly – Get the best of both worlds at City Hotel Frankfurt, located on a quiet lane just off one of the city’s busiest streets

Culture vultures – Goethe Haus (23-25 Grosser Hirschgraben), where Faust author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe lived and worked, is an absolute must-see.

Must eat – Perched on the 53rd floor, the Main Tower Restaurant (52-59 Neue Mainzer Strasse, tel. ) serves up great city views alongside modern European dishes, such as goose liver with bitter almonds and elderflower, yellow-tailed mackerel with octopus, tomato and avocado, and Stilton with pickled peach.

Must drink – Steinernes Haus (35 Braubachstrasse) serves huge tankards of German beer at long wooden tables.

Shop til you drop – For high fashion head to Goethestrasse, where you’ll find D&G, Gucci and Versace.

SACHSENHAUSEN

Renowned for its breathtaking views of the Frankfurt skyline and the Main river, this vibrant district pulls in the city’s boho set, which flocks here to crowd out the apfelwein pubs.

Sleep soundly – The Lindner Hotel & Residence Main Plaza has a look straight out of 1930s New York, and a polished avant-garde interior.

Culture vultures – Maintaining a tradition that started more than 100 years ago, Zur Schönen Müllerin (12 Baumweg) serves fantastic apfelwein made in its own presses.

Dance the night away – With bright red walls, neon lights and a large aquarium, Stereo Bar (7 Abstgässchen) makes a gaudy start to the night.

WESTEND

Fondly known as ‘the green suburb’ because of its two great parks, Grüneburg and Palmengarten, Frankfurt’s fashionable Westend is full of excellent restaurants.

Sleep soundly – Rooms at Hotel an der Messe (104 Westendstrasse, 7979, hotel-an-der-messe.de, rooms from €105) are all individually designed. Look out for African and Edwardianinflected decor in some of the suites.

Culture vultures – Ballet lovers should head south to Alte Oper (1 Opernplat), which also has some beautiful Renaissance architecture.

Must eat – Under the auspices of Klaus Trebe, one of the city’s most famous chefs, Restaurant Gargantua (47 Liebigstrasse, 0718) does modern takes on classic dishes, such as goose liver terrine with cumin brittle and quince compote, and carpaccio of veal with a truffle vinaigrette and green asparagus.

Must drink – With an excellent wine list and a relaxed atmosphere, COA Börse (4 Schiller Strasse) is a great spot to hole up in for the afternoon. It also serves Asian-influenced snacks.

OSTEND

Centred around Hanauer Landstrasse, Ostend is one of the city’s liveliest districts and is packed to the brim with modish bars and nightclubs.

Sleep soundly – Situated right in the centre of Ostend, Motel One Frankfurt has a contemporary, boutique feel.

Dance the night away – Run by legendary techno DJ Sven Väth for more than a decade, Cocoon Club (21 Carl-Benz-Strasse) is a Frankfurt establishment. A couple of minutes’ walk away is King Kamehameha (192 Hanauer Landstrasse). Head here for upfront house and nights hosted by Pacha and Hed Kandi.
