Berlin is currently being touted as the creative centre of Europe, and it’s true that young artists and musicians are flocking here from around the world. As Nadja Vancauwenberghe discovers, the city’s cultural life shows no sign of slowing down this month, with the Fairy Tale Days festival on the 6-23 November and the Japan Festival from the 14-16 November
Tempelhof Airport is located in the southcentral borough of Tempelhof- Schöneberg.
Train: The airport is connected to the city centre by U-Bahn line 6, which can be picked up from Platz der Luftbrücke station. The journey takes 10 to 15 minutes and tickets cost €2,10.
Taxi: The trip into the city centre takes around 15 minutes and costs about €12.
Tourist information: There are offices at the Brandenburg Gate and the main railway station (0025, visitberlin.de).
Faster, cheaper, grittier: Kreuzberg is the eccentric older sibling of the hip eastern districts.
Sleep soundly – The Baxpax Kreuzberg Hostel offers Swiss, German and Italian-designed rooms at budget prices
Culture vultures – Berlin’s eyecatching Jewish Museum (9-14 Lindenstraße) receives nearly 2,000 visitors daily. This architectural masterpiece extensively documents hundreds of years of Jewish history and is an absolute must-see.
Must eat – Il Casolare (30 Grimmstraße, tel. ) is an Italian restaurant so authentic you’d best bring a phrasebook. Expect the crispiest pizza and the loudest bunch of Italians you’ll find outside Sicily.
Must drink – Immerse yourself in Luzia’s (34 Oranienstraße) freaky-funky atmosphere. DJs here mix up hot new tracks with retro classics.
Dance the night away – Go all out on the high-voltage dance floor at Kreuzberg’s infamous Watergate Club (49 Falckensteinstraße), which overlooks the Spree River.
Shop til you drop – For Kings and Queens (32 Zossener Straße) does edgy sportswear and on-trend pieces.
The centre of Berlin’s gay community, diverse Schöneberg has great restaurants, shopping and nightlife.
Sleep soundly – The Jugendhotel berlincity is just around the corner from Tempelhof Airport, the site of the Berlin Airlift.
Culture vultures – Bring flowers to Marlene Dietrich’s grave at the Städtischer Friedhof III (43-45 Stubenrauchstraße), just two metro stops from the house where she was born (65 Leberstraße).
Must eat – Café Bilderbuch (28 Akazienstraße, tel. ) is a must for bookworms. Get cosy in an armchair and choose an old classic from Bilderbuch’s library or bring your own reading material.
Must drink – See Berliners engage in their favourite hobby: table football. Watch and learn while you tuck into beers and burgers at Fries ’n’ Friends (21 Pallasstraße).
Dance the night away – The elevator takes just 40 seconds to ascend to Berlin’s eponymous in spot 40 seconds (58 Potsdamer Straße). Mingle with the rich and the famous before watching the November sun rising in the east.
Shop til you drop – The KaDeWe (21-24 Tauentzienstraße) houses Dior, Chanel and Adidas under one roof. Take a break from retail therapy in the excellent gourmet food section.
Chic, anarchic and cosmopolitan – arty Prenzlauer Berg combines all three.
Culture vultures – The former Schultheiss Brewery has been turned into culture arena Kulturbrauerei (36 Schönhauser Allee), with a cinema, theatre, galleries and a huge programme of cultural events.
