Frankfurt is hardly the quintessential summer city, but it has a calendar packed full of festivals. Join in the fun at the Summer Festival, which is held throughout May in the Römerberg, or head to the International German Gymnastics Festival at the Messe Frankfurt exhibition complex from 30 May to 5 June. Carole French shows us round
Frankfurt Airport is 12km outside the city centre.
Train: The easiest way to get into the city centre is on regional S-Bahn lines S8 and S9. The journey takes about 11 to 13 minutes, and a single ticket costs around €4.
Taxi: A trip to the centre of Frankfurt costs about €20 and takes 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the traffic.
Tourist information: The main office is at Hauptbahnhof (tel. , frankfurttourismus. de).
The Zeil cuts a swathe through Stadtbezirke, the city’s commercial district, linking shiny skyscrapers with the historic Römerberg.
Sleep soundly – With a great location and comfort, Ramada Frankfurt City Centre (17 Weserstraße, 0810, ramada.com, rooms from around €60) is popular with business types and sightseers. The popular Savoy Hotel (42 Wiesenhuttenstraße, 3960, savoyhotel.de, rooms from around €79) is a few minutes’ walk from the train station.
Culture vultures – As historic as it is beautiful, the city’s double-aisled Alte Nikolaikirche (9 Römerberg) was the chapel of the imperial court until the 14th century and shouldn’t be missed.
Must eat – Located in the Historisches Museum, Historix (19 Saalgasse, 4400) celebrates the city’s history of cider making.
Shop til you drop – No visit to Frankfurt would be complete without a walk along the Zeil. Come here for top designer labels and one-off gems. Look out for Zeilgalerie (112-114 Zeil), one of Germany’s leading shopping malls
Characterised by green open spaces and shiny sleek buildings, this area of the city is home to the banking sector, the stock exchange, A-list restaurants and the landmark Alte Oper.
Sleep soundly – Effortlessly chic and welcoming, Hotel Villa Florentina (23 Westendstraße, tel. , hotelflorentina.de, rooms from €90) offers creature comforts in a great Westend location.
Culture vultures – The Alte Oper (1 Opernplatz) stages diverse musical events, everything from a performance by the Frankfurt Museum Orchestra to an evening with former Bee Gee Robin Gibb and his band.
Must eat – Head for Pacific Colors (4 Hochstraße, tel. ), in the lobby of the Hilton Frankfurt Hotel, for classic Californian cuisine such as seared tuna and almond and sesame sea bass. For something different, try Silk (21 Carl-Benz-Straße, 0200), a restaurant appended to the cavernous Cocoon club, where you can dine on ceviche and sea bream.
Must drink – The Avocado Bistro (27 Hochstraße, 2867) is known for its extensive wine list and its colourful flower displays. Try cold saddle of rabbit with chives and asparagus followed by medallions of veal served with white asparagus flan.
An elegant residential area known for its apfelwein (cider) pubs, Sachsenhausen lies on the south side of the river and offers the best views Frankfurt’s skyline.
Sleep soundly – Hotel am Berg (23 Grethenweg, tel. , hotelamberg.com, rooms from around €50) has great rooms, unusual décor and a fabulous secret garden.
Must eat – With minimalist decor and a creative menu, the restaurant at Hotel Cult (56 Offenbacher Landstraße, tel. ) is ideal for lunch meetings.
Must drink – Do as the locals do and head for Zur Schönen Müllerin (12 Baumweg), an atmospheric tavern that serves great apfelwein.
Dance the night away – Whether it’s indie, R’n’B or rock that rings your bell, you should be able to find a live band playing your kind of music at Das Bett (16 Klappergasse).
This is a fashionable district of parks, restaurants and specialist outlets along the Hanauer Landstraße.
Sleep soundly – Choose from hotel rooms or apartments at the centrally located Golden Leaf Hotel & Residence (2-4 Hanauer Landstraße, 9900, golden-leaf-hotel. com, rooms from €80).
Must eat – If you love sushi, you’ll adore Japanese restaurant Tawaraya (131 Hanauer Landstraße, 4437).
